    60 Grand ... for a blank canvas

These people are just fucking barking....

Blank Banksy canvas set to fetch £60,000 at auction
Artist Bob Law's Nothing To Be Afraid Of V 22.8.69 may look like a blank canvas with black pen round the sides, but the 1969 work is expected to fetch up to £60,000 when it is auctioned by Bonhams next month.

Bob Law’s ‘challenging’ Nothing To Be Afraid Of V 22.8.69 Blank canvas: Bob Law’s ‘challenging’ Nothing To Be Afraid Of V 22.8.69 which is to be auctioned in London

Law ‘had applied the seductive idea of nothing to a canvas, and asks the viewer to reflect,’ according to the auctioneer’s catalogue.

The Turner Prize-winning artist, who died in 2004 aged 70, aroused strong opinions in the art world.

Fellow artist David Hockney said he could not understand ‘four lines of ballpoint pen round the edge of a canvas’.

He added: ‘It seems to me that if you make pictures there should be something there on the canvas.’

But Bonhams’ head of contemporary art, Tony McNerney, said: ‘Bob Law is the most underestimated and overlooked minimal artist in Britain and this is the first major canvas of his to come up for auction.

‘He was doing what others were doing in America, but he didn’t get the recognition that he deserved.’

The work echoes the long-running French play Art.

In the play, which enjoyed a long run in the West End, two friends are divided when one of them buys a work that is a blank canvas.

One character, Serge, is proud of his 200,000 franc acquisition but his friend Marc describes it as ‘a piece of white s**t’.

The auction takes place in London on October 13.

If he'd left the borders off..might have fetched 100,000?

Underestimated personally I've have used the term "overestimated"!

Just goes to prove what we all really know and understand there's one (or two) born every minute, apart from the precious art world where it's more like every second!

All beyond me. I ate a few times at Damien Hirst's Pharmacy restaurant in Notting Hill - "borrowed" a crappy 3 inch diameter glass ash tray from the table and got offered 400 quid for it on e bay three years ago. Madness.

    Artist's shit

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artist's shit (1961), by Piero Manzoni

Artist's (Italian: "Merda d'artista") is a 1961 artwork by the Italian artist Piero Manzoni. The work consists of 90 tin cans, each 30 grams and measuring 4.8x6.5cm, with a label in Italian, English, French, and German stating:

    Artist's Shit
    Contents 30 gr net
    Freshly preserved
    Produced and tinned
    in May 1961

At the time the piece was created Manzoni was producing works that explored the relationship between art production and human production, Artist's Breath ("Fiato d'artista"), a series of balloons filled with Manzoni's breath, being an example.

A tin was sold for €124,000 at Sotheby's on May 23 2007; in October 2008 tin 083 was offered for sale at Sotheby's with an estimate of £50-70,000. It sold for £97,250. The cans were originally to be valued according to their equivalent weight in gold — $37 each in 1961 — with the price fluctuating according to the market.

One of Manzoni's collaborators, Agostino Bonalumi, claimed that the tins are full not of faeces but plaster; in contrast Manzoni's girlfriend Nanda Vigo, who helped him produce the cans, claimed the contents really were faeces. Vigo's assertion is disputed by Manzoni's brother and sister, but some cans have leaked and confirmed they are indeed faeces— though whether human or animal has not been verified. An art dealer from the Gallery Blu in Milan claims to have detected a fecal odour emanating from a can

Didn't somebody once release an album that contained nothing but silence? It would seem the perfect accompaniment for this witless piece of crap.
