    Trolling, it's not funny anymore

'Troll' who prowled Facebook | The Sun |News

A SICK internet "troll" who posted vile videos and messages mocking the deaths of teenagers including a girl who threw herself under a train was jailed today.
Twisted Sean Duffy, 25, targeted Facebook tribute pages and even posted videos on YouTube taunting the dead and their families.

Among his victims was 15-year-old Natasha MacBryde, whose body was found on Valentine's Day after a train hit her near her home in Bromsgrove, Worcs.

In a practice known as trolling, Duffy posted vile comments including "I fell asleep on the track lolz" on the Facebook tribute page created by her brother James, 17.

What he did was repulsive, but this sounds like just another attack on freedom of speech. If someone in my family died, the only on-line reference to it would be in the form of private e-mails. You post it publicly, you can expect some off colored comments.
Europe has already made so called "hate speech" a crime, now they are going after those who say things that are just not "nice"? Sounds quite Orwellian and the beginning of something that can be easily abused by an already manic government.

The future looks bleak, wouldn't most people prefer to endure a few insults and keep their ability to speak freely?

I agree. This gentleman was indeed a sick fuck but he didn't kill or rape anyone....all he did was open his mouth. One thing I will say in defense of the Merkins: they totally understand the concept of free speech. We Europeans still have difficulty with the idea. Must be a cultural holdover from the days of absolute monarchy. Amazing that a person could be jailed for posting something on Facebook (or Farcebook, as I like to call it)

    A fuller version -

Sean Duffy: Internet 'troll' who taunted teenager deaths is jailed for 18 WEEKS | Mail Online

I see what people are saying here, but this case has nothing whatsoever to do preserving 'free speech'. The Malicious Communications Act is something practical that is needed in the cyber age, where loonies can otherwise say what they like, however poisonous.

He attached to her tribute site another Facebook page entitled Tasha MacTank Engine featuring a video in which the face of the Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil was put on a train with the theme to Thomas the Tank Engine playing in the background.

Pretty shameful behaviour and clearly a young man who lacks respect of others, especially those that are already suffering.

Although i am not totally surprised that this lad had been given a custodial sentence and hopefully he will have time to reflect upon his actions whilst away from his family, it has to be said that there are many physically violent offenders in the UK who escape such punishment which imo, is quite bizarre.

The Daily Mail is - on the one hand, right to show these images, just so that people can see the ghastliness of what Duffy has done.

However on the other hand, the Daily Mail has compounded the folly, by reprinting them for a broader audience.

And the Daily Mail (now one of the world's most prolific websites) - does this all the time - for example, when posting photos of child models, which it does always in graphic detail, complete with editorial comment saying how disgusted the Mail is by them.

When will people realise that freedom of speech is not an absolute right and does not outweigh other rights? No country in the world allows full freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a right if, and only if, it does not conflict with other rights. Some countries apply this more stringently than others but the principle is universal.

Freedom of speech......... Like Hitler and his rants about the Jews.......Like the commies have in the states.........Like the News of the World............ Freedom comes from an acceptance of cultural norms. Basically that means that societies have the right to decide what is acceptable and what is not. Good on the nations that are willing to protect the civility and compassion that is constantly eroded by this sad moron and his supporters.

Jail will improve his behavior and make him a better person by forcing him to think about the wrong he has done.

    Jail will help him.

He will think twice about upsetting grieving people next time

2 months of sleeping next to a rapist will show him the error of his ways

^His real punishment is that he is now effectively unemployable - for life.
    (If he wasn't already).

And thats thanks to the information about him now online. The web, - which he abused, has now wreaked its revenge.

Of course, somewhat closer to home, we at TD, well at least the more sentient of our number, will be aware our patron is also guilty of such an offence in that scurrilous comments were made by him on numerous occasions about a certain individual........
