Amish men face jail in buggy safety ruling

Nine Amish men who refused to display an orange reflective triangle on their horse-drawn buggies have been ordered to jail for not paying court-imposed fines.
The men belong to the ultraconservative Old Order Swartzentruber Amish sect in western Kentucky. They object to the triangles because the bright colour violates their modesty code.
The Courier-Journal reports that the men say paying the fines would amount to complying with a law they believe violates their religious strictures.
Graves County District Judge Deborah Hawkins Crooks sentenced the men Monday to three to 10 days in jail.
The Kentucky Court of Appeals in June denied the defendants' appeal on the misdemeanour convictions.

Pennsylvania is my birth home where I have experienced this first hand. In the Lancaster, Reading, Chamberburg, and other rural locations where there are lots of Amish their driving of horse and buggy in the evening/night and other times of poor viability is a safety hazard and to drive them in those conditions without lights and or the orange triangle endangers themselves and the general public.

^It's a crock, too. Like SEA Traveler points out, the PA Amish use the triangles and other reflectors and they are still hard to see. I've never known the Amish to be unreasonable about this sort of thing or anything; as Christians the Amish are rather refreshing, because they are very much "cast the first stone" types, never criticizing anyone for not believing as they do. Maybe the Kentucky ones are radicals

^The PA ones too. Also will sell raw milk, which is illegal. They're renegades, the Amish.

I am from North Tennessee less than a mile from the Kentucky line. There are many Menoite which are basically the same as Omish. There were accidents very often with the buggies because cars didn't see them at night. They put the red triangle reflectors on and the accidents all but disappeared. Now, an accident with one is rare.

There are a lot of different branches, but you can call the Amish "Mennonites" accurately, they are just a very conservative sect of the "plain people."

Do you know if they'd object to a lantern? That seems archaic enough for them.

Check out this expose' of the draconian ways of the Amish:

I'm not sure who is the worst dickhead; these people or the nanny state that does not let adults decide their own fate. I could understand the State telling them they cannot transport children without the silly triangle, but if they want to die themselves, that should be an adult decision.

It's good for me to read stories like this, reminds me why I choose to live in Thailand.

It's not their own fate they're deciding, it's other road users, not to mention their own horses.

Just witnessed two deaths because of a truck parked on the side of a road at night with no reflectors. In Thailand.

a point to consider that was overlooked BobR is the fact that others on the road would be endangered as well... mainly the auto drivers and their passengers in the area where these buggies are riding.

Give me a break 'Modesty code'? A safety triangle on the buggy?
I could understand if it were something that related to their person, but a safety triangle.....?
I'll take the piss out of ridiculous and extreme beliefs wherever I find them regardless of what a little yapping nobody like you thinks.

Hitting a buggy in a car is not particularly dangerous, but like most of America's stupid so called safety laws, this one probably has more to do with increasing the profits of the well lobbied insurance companies than saving people from harm.

Damaged buggy. Dead Amish men, woman and children, dead horse, injured or dead car passengers, damaged car, possible damage, injuries or death to other road users as the car swerves at the last minute.....nah, safe as houses. It's just a simple precaution to prevent injuries and fatalities, where's the problem? What ulterior motive were the nine Amishmen driven by? That's the real question here. If they're serious about maintaining their traditions at all costs (even their own children's safety) why not just bite the bullet and avoid 'modern' things like cities and roads altogether?

When I was checking into the hotel in CM last week, a couple in front of me had completed all of the formalities, got a room on the forty-something floor, were about to leave, then turned round and said "We're Jewish, so on Fridays we can't use the elevator. That's a lot of stairs to walk".

So it's not just the Amish who should stay in their retarded bloody villages.

BobR, I'm noy buying your "Hitting a buggy in a car is not particularly dangerous," line. If you can't figure it out, no sense explaining. "peace to you anyway".

Never heard of this. I think they must have been lying to get a different room. Reception should have said "If you don't like the elevator, or stairs, you could always try the window."
