Airport security checks are set for a shake-up thanks to full-body scanners that prevent guards from seeing naked images of passengers.
Previous systems tested in UK airports produced pictures that revealed more bodily detail than some would have been comfortable with.
The latest scanner, which is being tested at Heathrow, uses radio waves to create a cartoon-like outline, with large yellow boxes highlighting any suspicious items.
It is thought the changes could bring about the end of metal detectors and pat-down searches in airports.
And, for the first time, the scanner allows security staff to show the images to passengers who are asked to go through them.
BAA, which owns six UK airports, introduced full-body scanners after the failed bomb attack by Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in 2009.
