Aussie bodyboarder dies after shark bites off legs

SYDNEY (AP) — A shark bit the legs off a bodyboarder at a popular surfing spot in western Australia on Sunday, killing the man, police said. Authorities were searching for the shark as well as the man's missing limbs.

The man in his early 20s was bodyboarding with five friends when the shark attacked, a police spokesman said.

He died at the scene in the surfing haven known as The Farm, off Bunker Bay near the western town of Dunsborough. The beach was closed after the attack.

Once saw a docu about Great White sharks that stated the reason for attacks on humans is mistaking divers or surfboarders (in black wetsuits) as seals., i.e their staple food source. Apparently, when they mistakenly get a mouthful of human they spit us out pretty quick.

Which is not much use when you've just been bitten in half.

    Pity he died.
Would have made a good bodyboarder, what with no legs.

this was a popular theory many years ago, but i don't think it proved to hold much water after years of flurescent coulored wetsuits - and no real difference in shark attack statistics.

If it was a great white it would not have eaten the limgs as it is not it's natural diet.

The shark hits with great power, severs the limbs and then releases because it is confused about what it has just bitten.

That's why it didn't return to finish the poor lad off.

    RIP young nature lover.

^ I was referring to legs and limbs (limgs) so you wouldn't get confused Bob.

Looks like my best efforts were in vain once again.

The balck wet suit bit was misleading, the rest probably pretty accurate. It the shape and motion that probably look "seal like" prompting the attack. Often sharks attack from underneath - with the person skylined - not much colour input there...

Problem with sharks is they have no hands etc - so to get a good idea of what it is they use their mouth, and bite the crap out of it. Humans etc don't taste like seals, not enough blubber fat etc, so they get spit out straight away - unfortunately a bit too late in most cases for the person...

Yes but if you get your legs bitten of by a tiger then usually, with the proper medical treatment, there is a good chance of them growing back.

When I go in the sea, I always keep me ears open for that music that plays just before a great white attacks, I blame the parents.
