^From the article- "The bear was shot dead by a member of the group." What were they supposed to do, they had a gun so of course they shot it, it was attacking. It isn't as if they went there to shoot bears. Too bad they didn't manage to shoot it before it killed the young man.

too bad the idiots didn't stay home and leave the bear alone.
Poms shoudn't be allowed outside urban areas. It's too dangerous for them.

I just bought a Polar Bear rug about a month ago. Its here in the living room. I'd upload a photo, but I think the file sizes from my camera are a bit too big for the site.

    And these are 'endangered species'...
Obviously not doing enough to 'protect' them...
The people in charge of the 'excursion' are simply clueless...
They should be held liable and refused permission to enter the area... even after they are 'wiped out' financially...

It did smell a bit funny at first - though its improving.

As Baitong says, not enough is being done to protect them. CITES still doesn't rate them as highly as say tigers. Hence trade in polar bear parts, and hunting, persists.

Such a cute looking killer, them things. Apparently they are much more aggressive than other bears. But there's too many us around, and not enough of them- so just stay out of their way.

It's not as if the fucking thing wandered into a garden in Surrey. There was no need for these brats to be there.

If we want to play in the wilderness we have to remember its someone else's country.
And occasionally the locals are hostile,i would rather they left the bear alone, but given the choice of watching my friends being ripped apart,or killing whatever might be attacking you i now what i would do.
After all, come on old chap lets be reasonable about this ain't going to work with a Polar Bear.

I am in Alaska and have a Polar Bear picture that would entertain you. I only have 40 posts, and it won't let me do attachments. Is there any way someone can help me out here, email etc.?

Horatio Chapple from Salisbury killed on British Schools Exploring Society expedition to Norway

Horatio Chapple died in the horrifying attack this morning.

A spokesman for the British Schools Exploring Society (BSES), which ran the expedition, said Horatio was a ''fine young man'' who had planned to read medicine at university.

Four other people were injured in the attack, which happened as a party travelling on a BSES expedition were camped on the Von Postbreen glacier near Longyearbyen on Svalbard, north of the Norwegian mainland.

BSES chairman Edward Watson said: ''Having spoken to the family, we are now able to advise that the young explorer who died on our expedition this morning is Horatio Chapple

Horatio's family from near Salisbury, Wiltshire, said they were too upset to speak.
It is thought the teenager was a pupil at Eton public school.

The party managed to get through to Svalbard Governor's office to call for assistance after the attack early today.

Eventually, the injured were taken by helicopter to hospital in Longyearbyen and then on to University Hospital in Tromso, Norway.

Earlier today, Mr Watson said that two of the four people hurt had ''severe'' injuries but that the rest of the expedition party was unharmed.

He said the society's executive director was travelling to Svalbard, adding: ''We are continuing to gather information on this tragedy.''

BSES Expeditions, which is based in Kensington, west London, said those injured were trip leaders Michael Reid and Andrew Ruck, as well as two young men - Patrick Flinders, from Jersey, who is believed to be 16, and Scott Smith.

''There were about 80 people all told in the expedition. The young people are all between 16 and 23,'' a BSES spokeswoman said

The young man was from my home town. A terrifying encounter for anyone to endure and a sad loss of a lad with a bright future. My thoughts are with his family. RIP young Horatio

Polar bears would be safer in Surrey "arry" not least because of the gun laws in the UK perhaps it's time to introduce one or two breeding pairs.

Who knows they might develop a taste for stockbrokers and bankers?
