    Mr. Bean prangs his McLaren

Comedian Rowan Atkinson was involved in an accident yesterday evening whilst driving his McLaren F1 supercar, colliding with a road traffic sign on the A605 at Haddon, near Peterborough.
The tabloid newspapers have as usual been besides themselves competing for the most sensational headline, singling out the McLaren’s 240+ mph top speed and claiming that “.. the car burst into flames”. The other popular headline is that the TV actor “cheated death in a high-speed accident” or my favourite, “Rowan Atkinson escapes fiery crash”.

In reality it’s nothing quite so dramatic and I’m sure Rowan is more concerned about damage to his car than himself. I live not far from the A605 and it’s a fast open road, with dual-carriageways in several places – not the sort of road where a driver of Rowan’s calibre ‘loses control’ without some other mitigating factor. The roads were wet earlier in the day, but by yesterday evening conditions were dry and visibility was good.
On arrival, police and paramedics found that the car had left the road, but was otherwise intact – if it had ‘caught fire’ as some have reported, then it must have been a small one.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was quoted in the local CambsTimes newspaper as saying: “One crew from Stanground, one crew from Dogsthorpe and a rescue vehicle from Dogsthorpe were called to a report of a car fire on the A605 near the Haddon services.
This was a fire caused by a single vehicle road traffic collision. The driver of the vehicle was out of the car before the arrival of firefighters and crews extinguished the fire using just one hose reel.”
Atkinson was taken to the newly opened Peterborough City Hospital where he was described as suffering from shoulder injuries.

The Blackadder and Mr. Bean star appeared on Top Gear a few weeks ago, setting the fastest time around the TG track for a ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’. Atkinson has owned the F1 for 14 years and spoke fondly of his pride and joy when interviewed by Jeremy Clarkson on the show.
Unlike most owners, Atkinson uses his F1 regularly, having clocked up over 37,000 miles and is both familiar with the car and the roads he was driving on.
We wish Rowan a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him in his new film, Johnny English 2 Reborn, which will be released later in the year.

My daughters cane home from school and were reading the (thai) news, they said Mr Bean crash his car.

The measure of the mans popularity, school kids reading a Thai website know about it.

Difficult to understand how Thai Children or British Children can find humor in a man whose comedy consists of him doing mean and malicious things to other people under the guise of humor. The lovable loser is one thing, but in some of his routines, he does things that are malicious and criminal like electricuting a man and leaving him on the sidewalk or sabotaging a college chemistry display causing an explosion. Silly is not funny.

That Macca is the one with most mileage on the clock, he is a driver for sure and has driven it since he got it 1998 and is his second accident in it.

Good to see he is prepared to drive it rather than have it as a garage ornament.
It will be repaired and fair play to him using a supercar as a daily, not many can lay claim to that.

He seems to be universally famous. I have met this Filipina girl while on holiday here in Phuket. She lived on Naval island in Visayas almost all her life where there is no cinema and the natives have 1 TV set between them. The only thing she knows about the west is Mr Bean. Will show her the crash footage when she gets off work.

Being asian many people assume flipper girl is Thai. I took her for a walk on Kata beach yesterday and this western girl had the nerve to say out loud 'Look at his whore' as we walked past so I paid 100 baht to hire the beach chair right next to western girlie just so I could spend 20 minutes rubbing sun lotion all over every square inch of flipper girl's tiny bod much to western girly's fuming digust.

For fucks sake. It's really sad when you can apply those views to a Mr. Bean show.

For Christs sake, it's Mr. Bean, not Itchy and Scratchy. Pathetic.

I'm guessing that is an example of the famous English dry wit. There is nothing reasonable about the price of a 98 McLaren F1 supercar.

Up until 1998, when McLaren produced and sold the standard F1 models, they had a price tag of around 970,000 USD.[6] Today the cars can sell for up to nearly twice that of the original price, due to the performance and exclusivity of the machine. They are expected to further increase in value over time.[22]

Yep, it's part of the Top Gear show where they put a celebrity in a shitty car (the same shitty Kia every week) and see who can do the fastest lap time. nothing to do with the McLaren.

Watch the last vid that Bangyai posted.

I was in the Storage rummaging & reorganising our household inventory when the news scrambled in. Just heard it thru BBC News update.

I sure felt relieved when hearing he wasn't a sordid casualty... jeez, he always tickles me blue when watching him.

[at]Bob, you have no idea (perhaps, to give U the benefit of the doubt) how his appearance alone "breaks the ice" these days.... with stressed up folks within a confine environment!!!

I was once invited to this Govt building, headed for the 3rd floor as pointed by Reception Desk and whoaaahhh, alighting from the escalator I found masses, MASSES and hordes of people, seated and in queue like one gets to see in Disneyland!
I was there to renew some legal document and there they were, many large flat-screen monitors at various points in the crowded hall-room, people were gazing at it and chuckling away and some, were just awed by what Mr Bean was doing....

Yes, that Dept found a way to resolve and lightened peoples hearts from stress, esp. when that day I went was a Saturday... holy mackerel, if I knew its going to be that jam-packed, I won't waste my Saturday at such a place for a lousy document and queuing for your turn as it needs absolute patience too.

I was told, there are several series played over and over again.... just to calm nerves and create laughs instead... well, Mr Bean did it and I always enjoy his ridiculous & preposterous wits if you want to know....

^Yep they play in on the TV's at the Electric Dept Office in OnNut, (the place where you go if you missed the 7Eleven deadline to pay your electric bill)

Don't know if they play it for nerve calming reasons or if it's just because that's the only dvd they've got but it would be nice to think they are trying to lighten the mood. The queues are horrendous in that place.

At my first year at uni, all our mum's sent us Christmas presents and as a house we opened them on Christmas day. I was mortified that my mum had sent me the Mr Bean box set and I didn't live that down with my house mates for the next five years.

Quite funny that he was just on top gear talking about how he drives his mc Laren a lot. Bit like the time when I thought how it was funny that my old car had these shitty tyres on them but I never got a flat then came out the next morning to find a flat tyre....
