Record 161m Lottery Jackpot Is Claimed

The UK EuroMillions ticket-holder who won Europe's biggest-ever jackpot of 161m has claimed their prize, Camelot has confirmed.
The individual is currently deciding whether to go public or remain anonymous.
Since Tuesday, Camelot has been urging people to check their tickets because the winner was losing about 9,000 a day in interest.
The lottery operator had said if the winner did not come forward within 180 days of the draw being made then the money and interest would go towards good causes.
Camelot said on a Coutts bank interest rate of 2.05% gross, the lucky person could be making an extra 9,079 a day.
However, other reports have said that figure could go up to 14,400 depending on where the person deposits the money.
It has not been disclosed where the ticket was bought or whether it was purchased online.
If the money were stacked in bundles of 50 notes, it would be almost 365m tall, almost four times the height of the Big Ben tower.
A Camelot spokesman told Sky News Online it was not unusual for a ticket to not be claimed within a few days of the draw being made because some people take a while to check their numbers.
And he said that occasionally people make bogus claims, adding: "We have rigorous security procedures in place."
He went on: "The champagne is on ice for the winner."
The jackpot numbers were 17, 19, 38, 42 and 45, and the Lucky Stars were 9 and 10.
According to The Sunday Times Rich List 2011, a single winner would immediately become the 430th richest person in the country, ahead of Beatles legend Ringo Starr (150m), but still just short of the Beckhams' league (165m).
The exact amount to be claimed by the winner is 161,653,000 while two other UK-based lottery players scooped 1.7m after matching five numbers and one Lucky Star.
Meanwhile, a man who won 26.1m in a family syndicate in January 2010, has urged the Euromillions winner to stay anonymous.
George Sturt, 77, who split the money four ways with his three children, said he had had hundreds of begging letters since he went public and regrets doing so now.
He told Sky News Online: "I've had so many begging letters. It was upsetting. One man even sent his bank account number for me to put money into.
"Camelot were wonderful and they got rid of a couple of bad ones", adding the firm had got in touch with those people and he has not heard from them since.

Bastards, it should have been mine. 27 quid I won. Hardly covering the yacht in Monaco and the ski lodge in Aspen, is it?

I got five numbers out of six when it first started and won just over 1k sterling I'd have thought it would be more and had to go to the post office to collect it (not Tescos). Don't play it now mostly because I don't understand it any more and I don't live in England and Tesco Lotus don't sell tickets.

If you don't understand the UK lotto, don't ever give the Thai one a go...

Last year in Canada I bought a ticket that had extra prizes of 1 million dollars each. You had to have all 7 numbers to win. I had 6 numbers and the one I missed was only one number off. I won diddely squat.

Ah well, next time... Jeez, even 10 grand would have done me!!

The thing i liked about this big win is the the fact that the winner is richer or as rich as the Beckams!!

Both unemployed, presumably because they're both morbidly obese.

The couple who scooped the 161m EuroMillions jackpot have said they are "tickled pink" by their win.

Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs in Ayrshire, said they had to check their numbers three or four times before realising they had won the record haul.
But they had to wait until the next morning to claim their prize, because the Camelot phone line was closed.
Their win will put them 430th in the Sunday Times Rich List.
Chris recalled the evening they discovered they had won: "We had enjoyed a normal night in front of the television watching CSI and so on.
"At around midnight I decided it was time to turn in but I did just quickly check the EuroMillions result on teletext in our bedroom.
"We had bought five Lucky Dips as the jackpot was now so big. I started circling the numbers I had matched but wasn't doing very well.
"Then on the fifth line, all the circles seemed to join up

"I had all of them but couldn't believe what I was seeing.
"I checked them three or four times before going back downstairs to find Colin. He knew immediately by my face and tone that something was up.
"After checking many times together, the news gradually hit us. The Camelot line was closed for the night but we couldn't sleep.
"We sat up all night and saw dawn come round the next morning - we were tickled pink.
"I even had a glass of white wine which is something I normally only do at Christmas. It really is unbelievable."
The couple also said they were keen to travel, with Australia and China top of their list.
Mrs Weir added: "We are not flashy people we are not celebrities and we hope that once we have shared our good news we will get time to go back to being ourselves.
"My hope is that we are a stronger family and we all have a good time."
Mr Weir said he would like "time to get his breath back".
"With great wealth comes great responsibility," he said.
The winning numbers were 17, 19, 38, 42 and 45, and the lucky stars were 9 and 10.
The couple said they would continue to play the Lottery, because it is "fun to have a wee flutter."

Colin and Chris Weir, salt of the earth they are! Lovely couple who have been down on their luck lately.

They had both been suffering from anorexia over a number of years and i am pleased to see that they have beaten that quite awful and physically unattractive condition. I wish them well for the future.

BTW, has anyone got their phone number or address so that i can pass on my good wishes in person?

These salad dodgers can probably afford gastric bands now, but what's the betting they eat themselves to death instead, now they can afford to clean out the freezers at Tescos?

When interviewed, they said that they would be getting a couple of bands for the big celebration. The interviewer asked if it would be The Rolling Stones or U2?

Neither, they said, were thinking more along the lines of gastric ones

Nah just watched em on tv all he said was all he was gonna do with it was ( mabe ) buy their daughter a new car ,,, he did stress mabe .

Anyway good luck to em both ,,,,,, she is actually a retired nurse so not actually unemployed ,, I am sure as they are just normal working class folk they just havent a bloody clue what 161 million is .

Bloody annoying thing is I bought a couple of Euro tickets in Falkirk only 2 weeks ago ,,,, should have bought for a couple more weeks mind you they did buy 5 tickets ,, but then if you did do it would it make you REALLY happy longterm ?? All I know is I am very happy and content inside , but I would love a decent win to provide a full time carerer for my brother who is very ill ( for the rest of his life )
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

As I said mate they are working class folk come into a wall full of money , like most of us wouldnt have a clue what that amount really meant . It will make at a minimum 9000 a day interest , if you dont touch the capital , so they will be 36000 better off today since their win . I think part of the deal when you win is they will sit you down for free with their financial advisors to give you a plan if you want to. I would certainly take up that option if I ever was lucky enuf to be in the position !
