Naked shirt-lifter beaten to death with duck-billed platypus

A MAN who bashed his gay housemate to death with items including an 8kg platypus statue has been found guilty of murder for the second time by a Supreme Court jury.

Melbourne man Aaron James Johnstone, 29, subjected Phillip William Higgins, a 46-year-old openly gay man, to a protracted assault involving kicks, punches and the use of an office chair before finally dropping the statue on his victim during the killing in September 2006, the Herald Sun reported.

Johnstone, who appeared to be handling a string or rosary beads in the dock, faces a potential sentence of 18-20 years, the court heard.

The jury had heard Johnstone "lost it" after a drunken Mr Higgins walked naked into the room where Johnstone was and proposed oral sex.

Johnstone, who pleaded not guilty to murder, had admitted to police he assaulted Mr Higgins but said he was angry at being propositioned and was himself "grossly intoxicated" at the time.

A Melbourne man who fatally bashed his gay flatmate with a platypus statue during a fight has been found guilty of murder.
Aaron James Johnstone, 29, "lost it" after his drunk and naked Phillip Higgins propositioned him in September 2006.
Johnstone told police he assaulted Mr Higgins before dropping the eight-kilogram platypus statue on him.
Johnstone had pleaded not guilty to murder in the Victorian Supreme Court but a jury took less than a day to find him guilty.
In his opening address to the jury, prosecutor Mark Rochford SC said Johnstone carried out a sustained attack on 46-year-old Mr Higgins.
Mr Higgins, who was openly gay, was found lying dead on the floor of their Seaford home with a pair of underpants beside him.
Johnstone's barrister, John Desmond, said in his opening address that while he did not dispute his client's actions caused the death of Mr Higgins, he did not intend to kill him.
Johnstone, formerly of Seaford, closed his eyes and shook his head slightly as the verdict was delivered.
He will face a pre-sentence hearing next Tuesday.

A man who dropped an eight-kilogram concrete platypus on his gay housemate as he beat him to death has been sentenced to 18 years' jail.

Aaron James Johnstone, 29, said he lost control after his drunk housemate Phillip Higgins, 46, propositioned him in September 2006.

He told police he kicked and punched Mr Higgins before dropping the platypus statue on him. He also struck him with a chair.

Johnstone was sentenced to 18 years' jail with a minimum term of 14 years at the Victorian Supreme Court today.

For murder he will be going to the high security hard-case and psycho jail. Hope he is allowed to take his platypus with him to fend of advances in the shower room
