    'Bold' anti-monarchy protest planned

    'Bold' anti-monarchy protest planned
    Sunday, June 03, 2012

Anti-monarchy protesters are preparing to stage a demonstration during the Diamond Jubilee river pageant.

Anti-monarchy protesters are preparing to stage a 'loud, bold and provocative' demonstration during the Diamond Jubilee river pageant.

Campaign group Republic said supporters from across the country will descend on the capital on Sunday for the 'biggest and boldest anti-monarchy protest of modern times'.

It will take place near Tower Bridge, on the south bank of the Thames by City Hall, close to where the Royal Family will watch the passing boats.

Republic said it expected 'hundreds of anti-monarchists' to join the protest, including representatives of the group's branches in Wales and Scotland and a delegation from the Swedish republican movement.

Protesters said talks have been held with Metropolitan Police and reassured families intending to travel to Tower Bridge to watch the pageant that the protest will be peaceful.

They will hold placards and banners saying 'citizen not subject', 'power to the people' and 'democracy not monarchy'.

Guest speakers at the event include human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and columnist Joan Smith.

Republic's chief executive Graham Smith said: 'Our message is to the wider public that there is an active and growing movement they can join rather than sitting and watching on TV. We are planning a peaceful protest and many families will be joining us.

'We can't wait for Sunday. Our loud, bold and provocative protest will be a major step forward for the republican movement and an opportunity to kick-start a real debate about the future of the monarchy.'

He added: 'People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate 60 years of one very privileged, very remote and very uninspiring head of state. The idea that the monarchy's future is any safer as a result of the jubilee is completely laughable.'

The fact that they are free to express their opinions shows that the Monarchy in the UK has nothing to fear.

What a bunch of soap-dodging, fucking retards. They have the vote, I bet they probably vote for the Socialist Workers Party or some other bunch of wack jobs.

The Queen is little more than a very good tourist attraction, and she probably puts in more work in a day on civic duties than these benefit scroungers do in a year - and she's been doing it day in, day out for sixty years.

I hope there are plenty of good British patriots to give them the leathering they deserve.

What the fuck have they ever done for Great Britain but whinge and sponge?

Whilst I wouldn't call myself a royalist I do like the royal family. They bring thousands (millions) of tourists to London every year and I don't believe the sponge off the taxpayer. Things have changed over the centuries.
I for one wouldn't like their lifestyle. Imaging trying to go short time with the paparazzi in tow.
I'll bet these whingeing anti-royalist protesters are happy to take the paid public holiday off work (if they have a job, which I reckon most of them won't have).
Shut up enjoy the celebration in the spirit it meant to be celebrated.
If you can't do that go into work or just piss off home and stay there and stop trying to spoil everyone else's enjoyment you miserable selfish pricks.

Liz is ok in my book, but that god awful song needs to go. A national anthem should surely be about the nation, the country not merely one person.

Withinall, i am putting you in charge of composing the most rousing and quite wonderful symphonic melody, yes something that the whole nation and even Andrew Lloyd Webber can feel truly proud of. Do try not to include the word 'Stoke'

I grew up singing God Save the Queen every morning, celebrating her birthday and generally thinking she was a grand person as I still do today.

I also thought that once she has departed so should the monarchy but I think that William will do a good job keeping the cash flow coming in.

Funny innit..? When you say "what does the Queen do?" the answer invariably boils down to "she brings in tourists" .. oh well as long as the fucking tourists are happy it's worth spending all the taxpayers money keeping them on then.

Don't be a complete moron. They don't get cash handouts from our government to go on holiday.

That only goes to asylum seekers and south asian economic migrants.

There's the airlines, airports, taxis, buses, trains, hotels, restaurants, shops.....

They have Chinese speaking staff at Harrods now they sell so much shit By Royal Appointment (even if it is the Qatari Royals, remember VAT is still enormous).

    A complete moron eh..?

You don't need to be spoon fed anymore Harry, you've swallowed the lot.

Yes it would be nice to think that the dear old Queen and her family are still supported by the taxpayer and their position is beyond democratic reproach, because they do wonderful things for our economy and image abroad.

However, the role of the monarchy is not to sell trinkets and postcards to foreigners, but to hold the balance of power in a class divided country.. an issue that is pertinent yet never questioned in a serious fashion.

Oh.. if only life was as sweet as in the fairytales, eh Harry..?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

Neo, thought you were off to live in Hungary, no King or Queen there but still a massive imbalance between rich and poor for you to educate them on the error of your ways. How about we have 100% inheritence tax and no one is allowed to pass any assets to their kids would that make you happy???

Given that every sovereign power of note is already delegated, I can only assume that your comment is a feeble attempt at covering up the fact that you made the mistake of thinking that the taxes that pay for the royal family are not offset by anything.

And given that every sovereign power of note is already delegated, I think the role of the monarch these days IS to sell trinkets and postcards; and factories and engineering projects, and produce, and technology, etc.

They represent all that is good about Britain. The Derby, Wimbledon, the FA Cup final, Badminton horse trials, the Edinburgh Tattoo, jumpers for goalposts, hedgehog crisps, warm beer, fresh dog turds on every grass verge, welshman fornicating with sheep....

    I'll get my coat.

Oh dear... don't mention the monarchy in anything but superficial terms..

Funny, for all your well intentioned national pride, you show little awareness of the crucial function of the monarchy, it's not benign and it has nothing to do with trade.

Still horses for courses as it were. Enjoy the celebrations.

Could be worse... I could be going to live in Stoke

Anyway I guess you had to Google that info, unless you are actually a Hungarian.
Thanks for the effort, now wipe the spittle off your screen and get the flags out.

The Monarchy means different things to different people.

Personally I feel we are held back as a society by having them but that it is somewhat counter balanced by the stability that having a Monarchy enforces upon us. I'm not certain that a Republic would be a better society, but it seems to work well for other countries.

Still at least we are able to discuss it.

I think we'd be better off with the royal family running the country rather than those halpess pricks in the government.

A problem indeed. Although the uk is certainly not unique. I'm sure there are worse candidates for Charles' crown.

Yeah.. you're better off with a Monarchy, it means you don't have to think too hard about stuff, it's all taken care of for you.
