    Vancouver Ice hockey riots

Vancouver riots after Canucks lose at home in Stanley Cup | Mail Online

Riot police fired tear gas to control a mob that burned cars and looted shops in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday after the Canucks unexpectedly lost the Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins.

Thousands of people were on the streets of the city to watch their team but in the closing minutes of the game, realising they could not recover from being 4-0 down.
Bridges into the city were closed by police as the city went into lockdown and people were being diverted away from the rioters while hospitals treated several people for stab wounds.
Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said: 'It's terrible. This city and province has a lot to be proud of, the team we have and the guys we have in here. It's too bad.'

Fucking idiots. Showing off for the cameras during a riot is worthy of Darwin awards for the thugs. I expect there will be an online data base of pictures on the web soon and there will be knocks on the doors of the morons.

Asians are nearly half of Vancouver's population, but I would bet about 90% of the rioters were white suburbanites from Delta and Surrey.

It amazes me how a sporting event can turn into a mass riot with property being trashed and people getting hurt.

Soon these games will be played behind closed doors with only the coverage on TV.

    Bunch of brainless twats.

It's not the true fans that do this. I remember the last time the Canucks lost in game 7 in 1994 and they rioted. Journalists were asking some of the rioters what the score in the game was, and they didn't know.

There is a huge outpouring of support by the real fans now setting up websites and facebook pages of pictures of the rioters to help the police identify them.

Metropolitan Vancouver is about 30% Asian, mostly from Hong Kong and Mainland China. There is a very large south Asian population in Surrey and out in Abbotsford. Richmond must be close to 80% Chinese. The dickheads rioting are a racial mix of suburban kids fueled on beer and testosterone. Welcome hockey hooliganism, not a whole lot different from the aftermath of some soccer matches.

The UK used to have "home International" football matches where the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland teams played each other in a competition.

The supporters (especially after England v Scotland matches) became so violent that there was talk of holding games in locked stadia without supporters. Eventually the entire competition was abandoned. The chief problem is that nobody has ever quite tamed the rebellious Scots.

The Vancouver police have already stated that some of the people they arrested were the same people who tried to cause trouble during the 2010 Olympics (where Canada won the Gold medal in hockey) so this "riot" may not really have been about the game at all. I would bet that they may find a few who were involved in the Toronto G8 meeting riots at well. Vancouver has a fairly well established anarchist community who will use any large gathering as a opportuntiy to hit back at the "establishment" and the society that feeds and nurtures them, but they hate it anyway.

The fact is; real hockey fans, even though they are obviously disappointed at the loss of the Stanley cup when most thought it was "in the bag" will applaud the performance of the winning team. In this case Boston. They played well and deserved the win. Overall, Vancouver is probably a better team but they were clearly not the best team in this final series. Real fans recognize that, lick their wounds and wait for next season. These are club teams, not national teams. Half of the Vancouver team is from European countries and most of the Boston team are from Canada....including a few from the Vancouver area....which makes the whole thing even more ridiculous. This was not a Canada vs US situation it was a Club vs Club situation......Like Man United playing Barca or any other inter club competition.

The kind of anti-social, destructive thugs who take advantage of these events to cause havoc and bring discredit to an otherwise very nice city have no place in any hockey rink or any other sports venue for that matter. They will be needing police protection if the real Vancover fans catch up with them....and it pissed me off to think that they will get it.

Vancouver has not won a cup in history so what do you expect ? They have only been in 3 finals.

It happens at Euro soccer games all the time so what is the big deal about this ?

I would have been dissapointed if there was no riots. Rioting shows commitment. People take hockey seriously around here.

    Blame the English.

    From wiki:-

After Lord Stanley of Preston was appointed by Queen Victoria as Governor General of Canada on June 11, 1888, he and his family became highly enthusiastic about ice hockey.

    Etc.

There would not have been a riot if they won, there wasnt for the gold metal game and the olympics where way more politically polarizing. . Some of what you are saying is true but face it, fans where drinking and things got out of control.

I wrote a story which made an incorrect claim that the person I was writing about was an alternate on a Canadian Olympic ice hockey team.

The guy who made the boast received a number of threats of violence from Canadians in Hong Kong, basically for dissing the Canadian team by trying to bracket his name with theirs.

So passion combined with aggression for Canadians, insofar as it applies to ice hockey.
