Italy overtakes France to become world's largest wine producer

Italy has overtaken France to become the largest wine producer in the world.

According to the European Commission in 2010 Italy produced 4.96 billion litres of wine compared to 4.62 billion in France, a drop of one per cent from last year.

Domenico Bosco, from the Italian agricultural workers union Coldiretti, said:"This result is fruit of the fact that production has been stable in Italy while in France it has fallen.

"The increase in Italian production must also be compared to the fact that the territorial size of the French vineyards is far larger than our ones. Exports are also on the increase – up 15 per cent compared to last year, which is a very good sign."

Mr Bosco also pointed out that what would be even more embarrassing for the French was that production of prosecco – Italy's version of champagne – would also exceed that of their neighbours with 420 million litres being produced compared to 400 million.

Britain buys around 12 per cent of Italian wine and is the third largest importer behind Germany and the United States.

Just finishing a 2 litre bottle of cheap Italian wine I picked up at Max Value for 395 baht. Only 11 % proof but not a bad little tipple for the price.

Well Mid , you're going to have to start digging deep for a good wine as the Chinese are buying it all up and bumping up the price.

That's quite incredible considering most Italian wines are utter dog piss.

I always thought that Italy and Spain was producing more wine than France, didn't realize that France was at the No 1 spot for volume ever, or was it just temporary ?

In fairness, it does say "producer" and not "exporter".

Italy sells more volume than France, but France makes significantly more money from it.

    Wow TD is so educational.

I had no idea Argentina produced so much wine. And they're not averse to drinking it, either.

Not least because of all the hype about French vino and of course after they've exported their wines they're marked up considerably and well over priced!
If you drink French wine in France particulary their caves you can buy great wines for peanuts.

Personally I'll stick with Chang and fuck the French!

Most if not all actually originated from French vines.
