IN ACTION: One of the six High Mobility Engineering Excavators.

The army today unveiled its latest piece of kit, new $800,000 fully-armoured combat tractors.

The six US-made 16-tonne green machines - capable of 90 kmh - were put through their paces ripping around a paddock at Trentham today.

Officially named JCB High Mobility Engineering Excavators, or HMEEs, they are designed to operate with and support a deployment of armoured vehicles - clearing roads and removing obstacles.

Lieutenant Colonel Rian McKinstry said the new tractors will allow operators to be protected from enemy fire, while clearing routes, building fortifications, or doing road works in dangerous areas.

The army has bought six of the vehicles, at a cost of $4.7 million. The cost included spare parts.

    ***********

Ready for war, now they have the tractors, combined with the might of the Navy. World domination beckons.

The New Zealand naval combat force currently consists of two Anzac Class frigates: HMNZS Te Kaha and HMNZS Te Mana; Also a multi-role vessel HMNZS Canterbury

There is no combat air force; the Skyhawks were mothballed for years and last month the decision made to donate them to museums.

The army has 35 Light Armoured Vehicles for sale.

NZ purchased 14 Skyhawks from the US in 1970 and a further 10 from Australia in 1984. Of those 24 aircraft, seven were destroyed in crashes which killed three of their pilots.
They were retired and put up for sale in 2001, but never sold, due mainly to the US State Department veto rights over the final purchaser.
Now they're off to museums after millions have been spent in the last 10 years keeping them operational.

Most of us will have driven off in a car with the handbrake/parkbrake applied, but . . .

RNZAF A-4K Skyhawk after it ...... tried to takeoff with the parking brake on, got up to 80 knots

Don't most Kiwi's with military ambitions join the British forces anyway? They're not going to get much action down there.

Truth of the matter is they had to use tractors. Traditional non farm-based military vehicles were found to unnecessarily startle the top secret, vicious, GM attack sheep.

"There's no point having an army 50 million strong if you can't control them." said Lieutenant Colonel Fred Dagg.

a problem with the Oz takeover - the ship to transport the tractors has broken down, being repaired in Singapore. Ship was built in Australia - I sense a conspiracy.

NZ navy frigate breaks down in Asia. The Royal New Zealand Navy frigate Te Mana has had to abandon a port visit to China after breaking down during a tour of Asia. The ship had visited India and was scheduled to dock in Shanghai on June 27, but that visit had been cancelled after it had to undergo emergency repairs on "defective bearings in the engine," Lieutenant Sarah Campbell said told the Xinhua newsagency.
