AIR PASSENGERS LEFT STUNNED AS NO ONE CHECKS THEIR PASSPORTS

NO PASSPORTS: There were no Border Agency officials at Bournemouth Airport

    Wednesday September 15,2010

    By Laura Holland

PASSENGERS were left stunned when they flew into Britain and no one checked their passports.

There were no Border Agency officials at Bournemouth Airport when the Ryanair flight landed from Malaga.
The security breach – blamed on a breakdown in communication – means terrorists or illegal immigrants could have entered Britain.

Bob Shepherd, 59, a frequent flyer, said airport security had been farcical.
He said: “Something like 180 people got into England without any form of identification required. I could have been a known terrorist.” An airport spokesman claimed around 135 passengers did have their passports checked.
She said: “The error was quickly identified by staff who arranged for the vast majority of passengers to go through the normal immigration process.”
A spokesman for the UK Border Agency said it was the responsibility of the airline or handling company to advise their staff when flights arrived.

There's something quite Thai-like about this avoidance of responsibility.

So if a snakehead wanted to smuggle in a load of illegals all he'd have to do is land at a smaller regional airport and not advise the authorities.
The people smugglers will be pleased to be appraised of this little tidbit.

Maybe they had a VIP TEFLer returning from his private yacht in the 'Med' to deal with?

Oh no Douglas - he'd bring them in through LHR. On the way through they could pick up application forms to be London traffic wardens ot to get a job at immigration control.

The wife has a similar thing happen at Tee-Side on a flight from Amterdam. The immigration officer saw the Thai passport that is the same colour as the EU one and just waved her through without chopping it. Lucky we caught it as It would have been fun getting her out of UK!!

You would be surprised, or probably not the way things work. In the late 90s due to unions or shift rotation or some other bureaucratic idiocy there was zero customs officers on duty in the customs hall at Gatwick between 1-3 (2-4?) am for at least a few months. If I knew then a lot of other people knew, so one can only guess how much stuff got through with the right scheduling. I trust it's been fixed since, or maybe not, who knows.
