Brit arrested & jailed for "racist" ringtone

British Man arrested & jailed for "racist" ringtone - PC gone mad

    Published Date: 07 September 2010
MOVIE fan Martin Smith landed in court on a racism charge after he downloaded part of the soundtrack from the 1980s comedy film Rita, Sue and Bob Too! and installed it as a ringtone on his mobile.
Martin, of Holmewood, north Derbyshire, claims friends and workmates got used to hearing the voice of an Asian actor reciting the words "I can't help being a Paki…".

But a woman from a mixed race family wasn't amused when Martin's Nokia went off as she queued alongside him at a village shop.

Over-hearing the clip from the movie – which chronicles the exploits of two schoolgirls growing up on a rundown estate in Bradford – the woman went home and lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Officers arrested the 36-year-old at home two days later and locked him in the cells at Chesterfield for four hours before charging him with contravening race relation laws.

Angry warehouseman Martin hit out after magistrates fined him £191 with £85 costs for using racially aggravated threatening or insulting words or behaviour.

He said: "Arresting me was a total over-reaction - surely the police have better things to do with their time.

"If Channel 4 can put Rita, Sue and Bob Too! on TV all the time, as it does, then why can't I play a clip from the soundtrack on my phone?

"If it's good enough for prime time Tv then it ought to be good enough for me and my mobile.

"My ringtone wouldn't have suited everybody, but the film's my all time favourite. I've seen it 15 or 20 times and I should be able to download what I want without the police hauling me off to the cells and calling me a racist.

"I've had the ringtone for a year and nobody's ever complained. All my friends and workmates thought it was hilarious.

"I've got a lot of Asian friends, who've seen the film and they thought it was really funny as well.

"I wouldn't have minded if the police had taken me to the station and told me to get it changed.

"I get on really well with Asian people and the last thing I wanted to do was upset anyone. I just did it for a bit of fun because I love the film so much.

"I'll not be taking any chances with the ringtone in future though. I'll be sticking to plinky plonky music like everyone else from now on."

The court was told the unnamed woman, who was from a mixed African-Mediterranean background, overheard the ringtone while she was waiting to be served at the grocery store near Smith's home in Holmewood.

Jon Barber, defending, said his client denied making a racist remark in front of the complainant, but accepted the woman may have been offended by the ringtone.

"He thought it was amusing – but it's a lesson learned."

Shopkeeper Geoff Wallage said the woman had made no complaint to his staff at the time.

"I feel very sorry for Martin, he's a really decent bloke with a great sense of humour and he didn't deserve all this trouble. I feel that it's been a complete waste of public money. They should have told Martin to swap his ringtone and left it at that, instead of dragging him to court.

"I've got a Pakistani accountant and he couldn't believe it when I explained what had happened. It's just ridiculous."

PC gone mad, and as the man said the Muslims don't need to wait to die before going to heaven because our idiots are importing them on a magic carpet with promises of earthly bliss.

A once proud nation turned yellow with age and senility that probably deserves what it's determined to have.

One can only assume it distracted her when she was counting her food coupons?

Who needs food coupons when they give them wads of cash?

Just wondering if it could be that when a society reaches a certain indefinable point in advancement it begins to destroy itself for natural regression, and then spends some time consolidating before it moves forward again.

Much like the stock market, though I doubt god ran that as the model for human progress.

Having just arrived onto our shores and with the crap that's going on these she felt she had to complain

Man what happened to that spirit of imperialism that made Britian a great country to begin with? In trouble for a ringtone that was not even threatening... She went to the police..???? what kind of F'd up laws does this place have... I guess there is not a such thing as freedom of expression and speach huh... Well okay its the UK to that should explain it... but this is even worse than the young man who went to jail for turning in a firearm that was dumped in his yard.....

So this is what you get when the populace cant protect themselves, and give in to every little whim.... Guess Being an American really isn't so bad... yet..

hes pathetic -this martin smith -'''I've got a Pakistani accountant'' - ''I've got a lot of Asian friends,''' -''I get on really well with Asian people'''
why did he not just say something like ---- yes i hate pakis , just like everyone else, how much did the Pakistani flood relief raise ? err about £5, so for sure i'm not the only one .
Better still do what i do and switch to the word stani ,and save yourself the £191 pound fine , OR maybe pacman ?

Reading something like this makes my emotions flow over, my eyes flood with tears, as I struggle to emerge from the deep dark depths, of imagining the thunderstorm of horror this poor woman, just trying to float with the stream of life must have felt, surely we all must be more sensitive during this waterfall of bad luck hitting Pakistan, we must not allow ourselves to go down, but constantly swim to stay afloat above the bottom-feeding human sludge, we must wash those sins away in unison, if we do, nothing is impossible! we can walk on water.

Personally I have a mix of these two as ringtone on my phone, I bet she would have liked that, it's such lovely music.

Singing in the Rain. Lovely song and great dancing. I think singing, dancing and whistling on the street has been banned somewhere. Probably in California, but the rules only apply to whiteys and Conservatives. We ran into old, old friends recently, and the guy greeting went something like "you ole bad-ass nigger!" and "you mother-fekin squaw stealer!" Dunno, lots of laughter, smashing of fists and bear hugs. No police came, but mebbe there's still time.

Could be she grasped at the opportunity to score brownie (sic) points in her community, or that she was hoping to make some dosh out of being offended. Or both.

Probably for the same reason, abject fear, that when Dispatches aired their "Undercover Mosque" expose showing Muslim radicals at work in the heart of Britain, the police took immediate action not against the mosques and individual Muslims - but against the producers!

Well done, in that case it can't be true...the slut didn't really complain because the bloke didn't use that ringtone and obviously he wasn't arrested or prosecuted or convicted for a criminal offence, or fined. He probably doesn't even have a Paki accountant.

Or, could be that the other mainstrean media conspired to ignore this blatant act of pc gone mad.

Still, you've made it pretty clear where your head is at.

Whilst this thread illustrated all to graphical how well fucked the UK is, it gives me such pleasure to see how Brits still have the best sense of humour when faced by such adversity.
