What a nightmare! Not the thought of a bomb, but having to deal that extensively with those TSA morons once you're on the ground after such a long miserable flight. Funny when dread over having to deal with bureaucrats and idiots ranks far ahead of any fear about being blown up.

Bomb threat on THAI flight to LA

Bomb threat on THAI flight to LA

There was a bomb threat on a Thai Airways plane en route from Bangkok to Los Angeles this morning, THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand confirmed to the Bangkok Post on Wednesday.
TG 794 left Bangkok on Tuesday night, said another senior THAI official who refused to be named.

The plane landed safely at Los Angeles airport about 10.50am Bangkok time, the official said.

According to the official, a member of the cabin crew found a message written on a mirror in a toilet saying that a bomb was hidden on the plane.

The message was discovered about an hour before the plane was scheduled to land in LA, Mr Piyasvasti said in a phone interview from Singapore.

The captain had decided to continue the flight to its scheduled destination, he said.

US authorities were alerted of the threat and would provide security teams to search the plane, he said.

It was expected that the passengers would be detained for questioning.

Update: No bomb found on plane

US authorities searched the aircraft of Thai Airways TG 794, after it landed at Los Angeles airport on Wednesday morning Thailand time and had so far found no bomb, Surapol Isarakura na Ayutthaya, head of crisis management at Thai Airways, said on Wednesday.
He spoke after THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand confirmed that there was a bomb threat on the plane, a non-stop flight from Bangkok to Los Angeles.

Mr Surapol said a member of the cabin crew found a message written on the mirror saying, "there is a bomb on the plane."

He confirmed that the aircraft, an A340-500, landed safely at Los Angeles (LAX) at 10.51 am Thailand time as scheduled. There were about 150 passengers. All were safe.

By allowing the the aircraft to land at LAX, US authorities had shown some degree of confidence in the screening and checking prfiocess at Suvarnabhumi airport, he said.

Thai Airways will release more information as it is available, he said.

Although I would imagine the police will get them all to write whatever was written and sign it a few times and get copies of their passport signature.

Most of these are BS of course. The world is full of people suffering from mental disease. At least they know it was someone on the plane.

An hour out of LA, they discover the message, and the Captain decides to continue to the destination. Get this individual out of any future press loop.

And if the message was written using lipstick, then it may have been a woman?

Thai plane in LA bomb scare: FBI
    (AFP) – 2 hours ago

LOS ANGELES — US police searched a Thai Airways airliner at Los Angeles International Airport after it landed following a bomb warning, but no credible threat was found on board, the FBI said.

Amid jitters days ahead of the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the jet was taken to a remote part of the airport where nearly 200 passengers and crew exited and bomb squad police boarded, said a Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman.

A written threat saying there was a bomb on board was found in a lavatory, she said. Passengers and crew of the plane were interviewed after it landed, she added.

"Investigators who conducted a thorough search of the aircraft, including passenger luggage and cargo, found no evidence to suggest there is a credible threat to the aircraft," said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

"Procedures to render the aircraft and its contents safe were conducted by FBI and (LA police) bomb technicians and canine handlers. An investigation to identify the person/s responsible for making the threat is continuing."
The incident comes amid heightened security ahead of the ninth anniversary Saturday of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon on Washington.

A spokeswoman for police at the airport said they were notified at 7:15 pm (0215 GMT Wednesday) of the alleged threat to Thai Airways Flight 794, which landed at 8:45 pm, on schedule.

Eighteen fire trucks and fire engines were placed on standby at the airport before the plane landed, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.

In a statement, Thai Airways said the plane was carrying 179 passengers and crew. The FBI spokeswoman told AFP she understood nearly 200 people were on board.

According to Thai press, the bomb threat emerged while the aircraft was in flight.

The Bangkok Post, citing an airline official, said "a member of the cabin crew found a message written on a mirror in a toilet saying that a bomb was hidden on the plane."

In Bangkok, Thai government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said there was as yet no information to link the bomb threat to domestic politics or to the recent US extradition battle for alleged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

"We still have no information on the cause of the threat and we are still checking whether a Thai or foreign passenger wrote the message," he said.

Panitan added that the incident was unlikely to affect Thai Airways' business.

A series of grenade attacks in the Thai capital in recent weeks has rattled nerves in a city still under emergency rule after anti-government "Red Shirt" protests in April and May in which 91 people died and about 1,900 were injured.

Bomb hoaxes disrupt well. Yet no need to build a bomb and hurt anyone.

    An old IRA gambit.

That's true, really the chances of a bomb just because someone wrote something on a bathroom mirror is quite remote, but little doubt most of the passengers and crew including the 194 who are innocent will spend hours with the TSA. The last one of these I recall, the idiot turned out to be an Emarates Flight Attendant who left a note in the bathroom. I've been on that flight, and after that long on a plane you are not in any shape to speak with anyone. Glad I was not flying today. Good luck to the innocent ones, I hope they are treated well.

Maybe they're inferring Bout's an IRA Republican now?

Very confusing or did something get lost in the translation?

THAI statement: Flag carrier aircraft cleared to depart Los Angeles after apparent 'bomb hoax'
    วันพุธ ที่ 08 ก.ย. 2553

BANGKOK, Sept 8, 2010 - Hours after an apparent "bomb hoax" frightened and inconvenienced nearly 200 passengers and crew, a Thai Airways plane was cleared Wednesday to depart the Thai national flag carrier's prime US destination--Los Angeles airport--and return to the Thai capital's Suvarnabhumi airport after an apparent "bomb hoax", the airline said.

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found no credible bomb threat to the THAI airliner, but the case is far from closed.

While the US national police agency found no evidence of an actual bomb, making such a threat is a serious crime punishable under Thai, US and international law. The Thai Airways aircraft landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport at about 11am Bangkok time after a bomb threat message was found in an on-board toilet while the aircraft was one hour away from landing.

"Investigators who conducted a thorough search of the aircraft, including passenger luggage and cargo, found no evidence to suggest there is a credible threat to the aircraft," FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller was quoted by Agence France Presse news agency (AFP) as saying.

Meanwhile, Ampon Kittiampon, Thai Airways International (THAI) Chairman of the Board of Directors disclosed details of the bomb threat on Los Angeles-bound TG 794 flight which departed Bangkok at 7.30pm Tuesday with 171 passengers, 14 crew and four pilots.

He said cabin crew found the bomb threat message in a toilet and alerted the captain, who followed safety procedures by informing flight operations at THAI's Bangkok head office and the local office in Los Angeles to be prepared for an emergency upon landing.

THAI’s Crisis Management Operations Center met urgently with agencies concerned and the plane landed safely at 10.51am (Thailand time).

Security officials and police in Los Angles screened passengers and inspected the plane thoroughly and have found no irregularities so far, he said.

The centre is compiling security information on the fight and will present it to security officials. The company will reveal the result of the investigation after it is finished.

After the landing, THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand was interviewed by the Associated Press in Singapore who said that the message was written in English using bad grammar-- warning that a bomb was on the plane.

Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said the initial investigation indicated that the bomb threat was not linked to the extradition of alleged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout to the US--which is still in process--or to any domestic political problem.

Preventive measures will be stepped up, but the incident is believed to have no impact on the business sector and passenger confidence in the national flag carrier, he said.

As the threat was carried out in the international airspace, it is deemed to be a crime and in violation of international law. Officials will speed up the investigation, Dr Panitan said.
