WASHINGTON — A Florida evangelical church vowed Tuesday to go ahead with plans to burn the Koran on the 9/11 anniversary despite fears it may fuel an angry backlash and endanger US and allied troops in Afghanistan.
The White House lent its voice to growing concern from military leaders that the incendiary move could trigger outrage around the Islamic world, as well as stoke a growing anti-Muslim tide of feeling in the United States.
"It puts our troops in harm's way. Any type of activity like that that puts our troops in harm's way would be a concern to this administration," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, reiterating comments by top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus.
US Attorney General Eric Holder was to meet religious leaders from across all faiths later Tuesday to discuss how to stem a wave of Islamophobia which has risen since plans were unveiled to build an Islamic cultural center close to Ground Zero in New York.
Saturday's anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks in which the World Trade Center was destroyed is also set to coincide with the festivities for the Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.
A small Florida church has vowed to mark Saturday's anniversary and honor the deaths of almost 3,000 people killed in the Al-Qaeda militant attack on the United States by burning a Koran.
Pastor Terry Jones said the Koran torching aimed "to remember those who were brutally murdered on September 11," and to send a warning "to the radical element of Islam."
But the US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley insisted freedom of religion was a pillar of American society, adding "the potential act of burning a Koran... is contrary to our values, contrary to how civil society has emerged in the country."
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen also warned during a visit to Washington "there is a risk that it may also have a negative impact on security for our troops."
Petraeus added that burning the holy book of Islam would provide propaganda for insurgents and fuel anti-American sentiment.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Petraeus told the Wall Street Journal.
But Jones, who heads the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville Florida, remained defiant, saying his group was taking Petraeus's words seriously, but "we have firmly made up our mind" to go ahead.
"Instead of us being blamed for what other people will do or might do, why don't we send a warning to them? Why don't we send a warning to radical Islam and say, don't do it. If you attack us, if you attack us, we will attack you," he said.
Al-Qaeda militants plowed two hijacked commercial airlines into the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001, destroying the twin towers and raining terror on the city.
Another plane was flown into the Pentagon outside Washington, while a fourth crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers overpowered the hijackers.
"Having spoken to many families across the country over the last few weeks, I have heard many Muslim Americans say they have never felt this anxious or this insecure in America since directly after September 11," Ingrid Mattson, head of the Islamic Society of North America, told a press conference.
In a coordinated show of support, top religious leaders from across all faiths came together Tuesday to fight Islamophobia before meeting with the country's attorney general.
"To those who would exercise derision... bigotry, open rejection of our fellow Americans for their religious faith, I say shame on you," said Richard Cizik, one of the country's most prominent evangelical leaders.
"We are profoundly distressed and deeply saddened by the incidents of violence committed against Muslims in our communities. And by the desecration of Islamic houses of worship," added Rabbi Nancy Kreimer.
But the plans to burn a Koran are already triggering outrage in the Islamic world.
There have already been protests in the Afghan capital Kabul and in Indonesia -- the world's largest Muslim-majority country -- while Iran has warned the burning could unleash an uncontrolled Muslim response.
On Monday about 200 men gathered near a mosque in Kabul to protest against the planned torching, shouting "Death to America" and "Long live Islam," witnesses said.

There was an 'incident' somewhat reminiscent of this in Queens, NYC quite recently. Some drunk wandered into a Mosque where people were praying, started yelling abuse and pissed on one of the prayer mats. He was shown the door, and the matter was reported to the Police. Note that he was not beheaded, not even beaten up, and there was no Jihad.

The current hysteria over Islam, recently stirred up by the faux GZ 'mosque' controversy, at least serves to remind us that when it comes down to it, we have plenty of zealots, bigots and cultural cowards that are no different to the loonie end of Islam. I suppose Nazi Germany and the Rwandan Tutsi massacres are other examples of this mass hysteria and how ugly it can get.

It's just a shame that it is the Uglies that are doing most of the talking now, or at least getting most of the media attention.

I just mailed the most popular talk show in holland ( i never care enough to mail but this time i had the urge to ask them to call a expert and prepare if they really need to invite provocators on their show). Again they had a radical muslim boy in his 20's who told all kinda bullshit about islam and stoning. Or they invite prof. janssen who kinda says muslims are crazy lol ( his only publications on the matter is his obsession with the extremist writings, for which he has translated and earned his phd and proffesorship). If you are a muslim and want to become famous, just start writing radical stuff and you'll be on tv.

You could read the more lurid parts of the bible and say exactly the same thing.
But massacring Gideanites, Canaanites and various other "ite's" is so passe'.

Why people are so concerned about ancient texts allegedly written by semi-literate goatherders is beyond me. It is the practise of a religion- specifically how it effects us, our rights and freedoms- that should concern us, not some faded pieces of parchment.

I hate book-burning fundamentalists of all stripes. All those ignorant bastards belong back in the Middle Ages.

While I stand by my view that this is a dumb idea, there are several issues involved beyond the rights (sic) and wrongs of burning the Koran.

I don't agree with book burning, period. But every free person has the right to burn Alice in Wonderland, or the Koran, or a copy of the Constitution or any other book, though imho the deliberate timing of this event is in bad taste.

Instead of burning the Koran, they should hold it up to educate snoozing Westerners to its violence, depravity, and incompatibility with modern day civilisation.


Aside from Muslims, which is expected, the most vocal groups against the burning are the liberals, far left and apologists for Islam, which are not always the same and include some overlap. These people claim to stand for rights - the right to burn flags and books, but not those of Islam; freedom of religion in the West, but not in Muslim nations; equality for women, but not Muslim women; the right of free speech and expression, which includes protests against the West, Zionism, Jews, and Christianity, but not when it includes criticism of Islam; the right to burn bibles, but not the Koran.

For example, the rabid Left in the form of the ACLU, which purports to protect civil liberties, believe it is the absolute right of every American to join Al-Queda and kill Americans. Consider the absurdity of such a stand, and the depths to which Western society has fallen for such an outrage to be even considered as a right.

Such people are filled with hate and live in a constant state of contradiction and denial; their only resource is to support any cause that undermines the structure of Western civilisation.

One of our main problems is that we accept Islam as a backward, violent, irrational and threatening ideology doomed to remain in a state of stagnation. This is why we excuse and appease and make astonishing allowances for its conduct whilst holding ourselves to higher standards. This is demoralising and a recipe for disaster, since it can only weaken us and strengthen Islam.


Rant over, and I stand by my prediction that Western lives will be lost and attributed by the Muslim murderers to this book burning. And if the book burning doesn't take place it makes no difference because those same lives will still be taken for Allah, now as retribution for having considered the blasphemy.
