Israel : Promising new HIV treatment

    Promising new HIV treatment
    3/09/2010

Israeli researchers have developed a new treatment for HIV that kills human cells infected with the virus and could lead to a breakthrough in treating AIDS, the Haaretz newspaper said on Friday.

Whereas current treatments focus on inhibiting the replication of the HIV virus, the new treatment destroys infected cells without damaging healthy ones, the newspaper said.

The process makes use of peptides, or short protein segments, which vastly increase the replications of the virus once it enters a cell, causing the cell's self-destruction, Haaretz said, citing one of the researchers.

"The usual medications kill the virus that has entered the body during infection and the (peptide) treatment allows cells infected with the genetic load of the virus to be killed," Abraham Loyter, who carried out the study, was quoted as saying.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed British journal "AIDS Research and Therapy" in August and was co-authored by Loyter, Aviad Levin, Zvi Hayouka, and Assaf Friedler.

The researchers could not be reached on Friday, a day off in Israel.

They have registered an Israeli patent but the treatment must still be tested on animals and humans, Haaretz said.

Around 33.4 million people suffer from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS.

The vast majority, more than 30 million, live in low and middle-income countries, according to the World Health Organisation.

New Israeli treatment kills HIV cells
    September 05, 2010

A treatment that completely destroys HIV-infected human cells in laboratory cultures has been developed by a team of researchers at Israel's Hebrew University (HU) of Jerusalem.

The therapy, developed by scientists from the university's Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences and the Institute of Chemistry, destroys cells infected with HIV without damaging adjacent healthy cells.

It is described in an article published last month in the scientific journal AIDS Research and Therapy.

To date, no therapy has succeeded in completely destroying HIV-infected cells.

The new treatment is based on the fact that when the virus infects a cell, its DNA penetrates the cell, which then manufactures new HIV viruses that infect neighboring cells.

Dr. Abraham Loyter of HU explains that peptides, or segments of short proteins that the scientists developed, interfere with the HIV virus's replication of its genetic material, by transmitting a massive number of replications of the genetic material into the infected cell, triggering its self-destruction.

The study examined the effectiveness of the new treatment on the HIV-1 virus, which is the predominant cause of AIDS in developing nations.

Yissum, the HU technology transfer body, is seeking a commercial partner to continue developing the treatment.

An estimated 33.4 million people worldwide are carriers of HIV. In Israel, in 2008, 390 new cases were reported, the highest figure in a decade.

The current breakthrough joins other new therapies being developed to fight AIDS, such as a US-funded study in Thailand of an AIDS vaccination, and a vaginal gel developed in South Africa that prevents replication of the virus and reduces the risk of infection by 54 percent.

This is encouraging, to be sure. More often than not, such breakthrough treatments will always become bogged-down in politics and bureaucracy amongst all the fanfare and back-patting as to a real mass distribution for worldwide practicalities - availability and affordability.
