British man sets new round-the-world cycle record

A British man, Vin Cox, has set a new world record for the fastest cycle ride around the globe.

Mr Cox, 34, completed his 18,172 mile trip in London’s Greenwich at 3pm on Sunday after 176 days on the road.

The previous Guinness World Record was held by Mark Beaumont who did the journey in 195 days in 2008.
Mr Cox, a cycling proficiency instructor from Cornwall, set out from Greenwich on 7 February and has taken 12 plane and boat transfers, crossed six continents and cycles through more than 20 countries.
He took on the challenge to raise money for the Geoff Thomas Foundation, which works with the blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research to get advanced new treatments to patients more quickly.
He said: “I am delighted to have finished and to have set a new record.
“I planned a pretty adventurous route and it has meant that I’ve had an incredibly broad experience of different cultures and climates – all the things which make cycling both difficult and exciting. I’ve met some amazing local people and other adventurers along the way.”
“The ride has kept on throwing up adversity for me to overcome – a severe bout of dysentery which meant I couldn’t ride for two days, endless headwinds in Australia and a pass closed due to snow in California. That’s all on top of the conditions you naturally plan for such as the heat in Death Valley, Nevada and Arizona.”
Mr Cox’s journey took him through France, across Northern Africa, across Asia, then through Australia, Northern America and then up through Spain and France and a final leg from Plymouth to Greenwich.
Geoff Thomas, who played football for England and Crystal Palace until he battle leukaemia in 2003, said: “What Vin has achieved is absolutely incredible. I completed the Tour de France after going into remission from my leukaemia and that was one of the toughest things I have ever done.
"To cycle ten-times that distance uninterrupted and keep going takes an amazing amount of physical and mental strength – it’s inspirational.”

Well, anyway, Cox must be a bit disappointed that his world record only lasted a few days. Can't find anything in the British press about Alans effort for the king yet.

Cox has submitted his claim on the Guinness World Record: 163d 6hr 58min for 18225.7mi. 31 days faster than the old record. (This is after the allowed deductions)

Cox's effort was monumental. It was achieved on his own which means navigation and accomodation, food and water to find yourself, not to mention bike repairs, unlike Alan who had a support team. If Alan's record is accepted by Guiness which it may not be for whatever reason, it will not take anything away from Mr Cox most worthy effort.

Agreed. Interesting to have two cyclists on the road at the same time both with a claim for a new world record. I wonder what the nearest they came to each other was or if they were even aware they had competition. If Bate's effort is accepted it will take some beating for sure.

If you read about Cox, especially his Diary entries on the website: greatbikeride.com, you will see that his reasons for doing it were not all about speed. Cox is a true adventurer, he specifically chose a challenging route which included in some cases roads which were barely passable having suffered from a recent earthquake, on other occasions he knew that the route taken would inevitably take longer or require more effort but Cox clearly wanted to get a lot more from the journey than just a record. I have no doubt that had Cox wanted to cycle a boring but faster route he easily could have. Therefore in my opinion to have enjoyed the adventure and experiences Cox has had and still manage to smash the current record is truly astonishing and I admire his adventurous spirit.

For this reason, specifically racing Alan would have been therefore boring for Cox. If Alan had taken the route Cox took and been on his own, I think it highly unlikely he would have come in anywhere near Cox time. Which is why the two should not really be directly compared, they are riders with a very different ethos. Guinness should differentiate between supported and unsupported attempts in my opinion.

Great Bike Ride - The adventures of Vin Cox

Very interesting read. Only a casual cyclist myself but like to get out on 2 wheels when I can, even if its only for 30 minutes in the evening around the local countryside.

Bates was not only supported, he also had from time to time other cyclists riding with him, which no doubt helped him keep a good pace.

Both are commendable, but there can be no doubt that the Cox run is far more creditable.

There is nothing in the UK press about Bates, well after all he is Thai now.
