A Sri Lankan housemaid with nails embedded in her body is to undergo surgery, her doctors said.

LP Ariyawathie, 49, said her employer in Saudi Arabia inflicted the injuries as a punishment, according to medics at Kamburupitiya Hospital, Sri Lanka.

"She was brought in complaining her Saudi employer drove nails into her body," said hospital director Prabath Gajadeera.

"X-rays showed that there were 24 nails and a needle."

The nails were up to two inches (5cm) long, said Mr Gajadeera.

"There is one nail on the forehead, just under the skin," he added.
'Deeply traumatised' Ms Ariyawathie, a mother of three, travelled to Saudi Arabia in March to become a housemaid.

Last week, she flew back to Sri Lanka and was admitted to hospital in the south of the island, where she told doctors she had undergone abuse for more than a month.

"When we checked her, we found 24 metal pieces in her legs and hands. She still can't properly sit down and walk," Dr Kamal Weerathunga told BBC Sandeshaya.

Doctors said Ms Ariyawathie was deeply traumatised and unable to give full details of her experience.

But she is not in a serious condition and surgeons are expected to try to remove the metal objects from her body on Friday.

Sri Lankan authorities have told journalists in Colombo that an investigation has been launched.

Around 1.8 million Sri Lankans are employed abroad, 70% of whom are women.

Most work as housemaids in the Middle East, while smaller numbers work in Singapore and Hong Kong.

A judge in Riyadh awarded $670 damages to the maid, Nour Miyati, but dropped all charges against her employers.
The female employer, who admitted the abuse and was originally sentenced to 35 lashes, had her sentence overturned.
Human Rights Watch said the ruling on Monday was "outrageous", and sent "a dangerous message" to Saudi employers.
Ms Miyati, 25, contracted gangrene after allegedly being tied up for a month and left without food in 2005. She had to have several fingers and toes amputated.

She is currently in the Riyadh Medical Complex hospital.
The maid, 20, working in the house of a Civil Defense officer in Riyadh, was hospitalized three weeks ago, Al-Dandani said.
According to a medical report prepared by the hospital, the maid was semi-conscious and had sustained burns of varying degrees on her genitals and back. When she was brought to the hospital by the Red Crescent, according to the attorney, she had broken teeth and a bleeding mouth and black marks on her face and around her eyes. The Red Crescent was notified about the woman by members of the public who found her lying on the road.
“This is the 16th case of abuse of housemaids registered at the Indonesian Embassy this year. Some of them were victims of rape and consequently illegitimate pregnancy,” the attorney told Arab News.
“The sponsor, who visited the embassy yesterday morning, denied all charges made by the maid against him and his wife. He said he did not know how she received physical injuries and they had never ill-treated her. The maid, on the contrary, insisted that the sponsor and his wife struck her and they had not paid her salary for the 19 months and 14 days she worked for them,” the attorney said.
Regarding the role of the embassy in such cases, the attorney said: “In issues of ill treatment of maids, the embassy takes the necessary steps to protect the victim from violence, including legal measures.”
The maid said in her statement to the embassy that she was tortured because she did not know the specific needs of Saudi families. She said she had received training in Saudi domestic work before she traveled to the Kingdom 20 months ago, the attorney added.

Quite often once they arrive in the ME they become prisoners, slaves, and sex slaves. Their passports are almost always taken from them, they are broke and heavily indebted back home, they do not speak or read the language, know little about Arab culture and even less about Islam, and are at the mercy of their employer or those they are sold or leased to. If they manage to leave or escape, without money or a passport, they have nowhere to go.

This is done with the full knowledge and therefore complicity of the respective ME governments. Check out 'Dubai's Dirty Little Secret', and the string other videos and reports that polite society abhors.

Some of these vulnerable people are offered less intolerable conditions if they convert to Islam, while others are given the choice of conversion or the sack, which would mean they are effectively marooned in a strange land of strange people, with no money and deeply in debt back home, where their original contracts were sponsored.

This is modern day slavery, carefully ignored by the West, which is understandable since our spineless leaders wouldn't want to upset the oil barons. But this should come as no surprise either, when you consider that the up front Islamic slave trade in Africa operates to this day!

Not at all a dangerous message, more that Saudi taskmasters should ensure that such things are kept in-house and prevented from reaching the Western media.

Who knows, could be other Saudi employers will get the right message, rather than the polite translation of the wimps at HRW.

I think you will find that the saudi judge was think about his own domestic situation. If he had punished these fine examples of saudi humanity to any punishment it would have sent a far more dangerous message to domestic workers, i.e. you do have some rights, you are not lower than a dog or pig; this would threaten the whole structure of saudi society.

I have a friend in N Yemen who I have known for over 20 years.
He has a servant/ companion of Sudanese extraction all his life- Osman
Osman and his family live in the same compound in Sana'a as my friend in a nice house with A/C etc and all the amenities that my friends family have.
Nice situation

My friend and Osman both freely admit that Osman is the third generation of Osmans family that have been slaves bought by my friends grandfather early in the 1900's !!

In this case all are happy with the situation - vastly different than the Saudi cases .

These girls are trafficked; their families pay large sums to secure them the jobs, and the salaries they are offered means they'll work for two years before they earn anything.

That of course makes the assumption that they'll get it. Usually their passports are taken off them, they're forced to work 16x7 and more, and have no legal status under Middle East labour laws, so they are stuck until they run away or kill themselves - both of which happen on a regular basis. Sometimes they fight back, in which case, they get convicted of heinous crimes with no mention of self defence.

Let's not just blame the lazy good for nothing ragheads here (even the poorest families will get a maid, because the mothers can't be arsed doing ANYTHING). Somewhere in Sri Lanka is a rich fucker who's pocketed her family's $10,000 knowing he's sending her to hell.

Couldn't agree more. But demand and supply is like the chicken and the egg, so after a long discussion we may end up disagreeing only on which barbarians to string up first.

The girls aren't trafficked, Harry. They're sent there by employment agencies.

You don't have this phenomenon of importing foreigners for domestic labour legally in Thailand because that part of the workforce is covered by Lao, Cambodians and Burmese. Who're treated just as badly or well as domestic imported labour in Singapore, Malaysia or Saudi.

Another thing worth noting is that Indonesian maids overseas are generally Muslims.
