The knife-weilding Somali refugeee who attempted to hijack a flight from Blenheim to Christchurch will serve at least six years in prison.
Justice Christine French sentenced Asha Ali Abdille, 36, to nine years imprisonment with a non-parole period of six years for trying to hijack an aircraft more than two years ago.
Justice French said the starting point for sentencing for the crime was 15 years.
Abdille had a number of previous convictions and was on bail for another offence at the time, which added 12 months.
Abdille's guilty plea and background of mental health issues were taken into consideration, bringing it down to nine years
On February 8, 2008, Abdille tried to hijack an Air New Zealand-Eagle Air 19-seater Jetstream 32 aircraft.
She brought three knives on board and was overpowered by the crew after the aircraft landed in Christchurch.
Abdille's counsel Elizabeth Bulger read a statement from her client in court, where she spoke of fleeing war-torn Somalia and moving to New Zealand.
When hijacked the plane she was attempting to flee New Zealand to get to Australia.
A depositions hearing in December 2008 was told Abdille wanted to either hijack the plane to Australia or crash and kill everyone on board.
She approached the pilots about 10 minutes after takeoff and claimed she had two bombs.
She came close to causing the aircraft to crash after she interfered with controls.
When the plane landed at Christchurch Airport, Abdille allowed the passengers to get off, and while she was distracted the captain shoved her, wedging her in the aisle, the captain told the court in 2008.
He tried to get the knife from her, but was cut on the hand. The first officer, who landed the plane, kicked the knife from her hand before police boarded.
The captain needed stitches in his right hand and surgery to reattach muscles, tendons and nerves in his left hand. He also had a cut on his back. The first officer had a cut foot.
The captain told the depositions hearing that the hijack started with Abdille thrusting a knife at him. He tried to grab her wrist but was cut.
The seven passengers stayed in their seats. "They were scared and several passengers were crying, " the pilot said. "She said at one stage we were all going to die. She didn't say how."
A female passenger described Abdille as upset and agitated.
"At times she was very angry, at other times she appeared frightened, other times crying and wiping her tears away."
Abdille lived in Blenheim for five years and worked in vineyards.
She has convictions for threatening to pour petrol on a Red Cross member in Wellington and throwing a bucket of faeces over a Hastings constable.
