Hijacker to appeal sentence

A Somali refugee who hijacked a New Zealand plane in 2008 is appealing her nine-year jail sentence.

Asha Ali Abdille, 36, was sentenced in the High Court at Christchurch in August after admitting hijacking a 19-seater plane in February 2008 and threatening crew and passengers with a knife. She was given a six-year non-parole period.

The Court of Appeal this morning confirmed she had lodged an appeal against the sentence.

Abdille was described at her sentencing as a refugee from the horrors of Somalia who never fitted into New Zealand society.

The incident, which terrified passengers and crew, was the only in-flight aircraft hijacking in New Zealand history.

Abdille boarded the flight from Blenheim to Christchurch and demanded she be taken to Australia.

When she was told that was not possible she attacked the captain, first officer, and a woman passenger with one of three knives she was carrying.

The captain's hand was badly injured and he had to have part of a thumb amputated. The first officer had a cut foot. The court was told that one of the pair had given up flying.

Abdille has 27 previous convictions and she was on bail for threatening to kill and possession of a weapon at the time of the hijacking.

Justice Christine French said Abdille had post traumatic stress disorder, on-going adjustment difficulties, and behaviour disturbance.

Some of the people on board the flight had declined to provide victim impact statements because they did not want to relive an episode where they thought they were going to die.

Waive her sentence if she'll go back to Somalia.
