Thai overstayer eludes police
August 18, 2010
A Thai man who has been living illegally in New Zealand for two years has given police the slip in the western Bay of Plenty, despite an extensive search involving dog team and a helicopter.
Payeo Chaimat, 26, fled from police and immigration officials at a rural Te Puke property about 7pm yesterday.
He was one of three Thai nationals who came to the country in August 2007 with a year-long work permit but never left.
Western Bay of Plenty police area commander Inspector Mike Clement said this afternoon they had not yet found Chaimat, who speaks "understandable" English, and they believed he had changed his clothing and may have left the specific search area.
"While we want still want to talk to Mr Chaimat further about his immigration status, our immediate priority today has been to try and find him and ensure he is safe. Hence the extensive search and rescue operation this morning."
The other two men are in police custody.
