Man, 63, built cannabis factory in his garage

Man, 63, built cannabis factory in his garage - and hid it from his wife

William Bergin used cannabis for his eczema

A 63-year-old man turned his garage into a sophisticated cannabis factory – and hid it from his wife.
William Bergin knocked down a wall in the detached building, insulated it with silver foil and installed lighting and ventilation.
But he was so secretive that even his wife didn’t know what he was up to, Manchester magistrates court heard.
Bergin’s cover was blown when thieves broke into the garage. A neighbour called the police who discovered the cannabis factory, described by a judge as ‘sophisticated and expensive - and highly effective’.
Bergin, of Ranford Road, Burnage, admitted cultivating cannabis and was given a suspended four-month jail sentence, 120 hours’ unpaid work and £85 prosecution costs.
Declan Doherty, defending, said Bergin smoked cannabis because it gave him comfort and relief from his severe eczema. But district judge Paul Richardson said: "For years people have been advancing medical reasons for growing cannabis but most of them don’t fill their garage with cannabis plants.
"This was a well thought-out system and what you did crosses the custody threshold."
Jennifer Baines, prosecuting, said police had recovered 50 plants. It was accepted the plants hadn’t been for commercial supply . Mr Doherty said Bergin disputed the number of plants. He claimed he was only feeding 18 and leaving the rest to die.
He said: "It began as an experiment and he didn't expect all the seeds to grow and his wife knew nothing about the farm.
"She is angry at the shame he has brought on the family and he is deeply embarrassed and upset."

We need a reality check here folks.

These agricultural products may have been for export, bringing some relief to the UK's defecit in goods and services. It's long past time that the new conservative government stood up for the small businessman and removed the red tape and handcuffs holding them back.

^^Think the neighbor called the cops to report thieves breaking into his garage, not to rat him out.

Yeah, I think I misread it.

    Still, you've gotta blame somebody.

IMHO Judge Paul Richardson's sentencing was just about right for the gravity of the actual "Crime". At least it shows some of them are in touch with reality.

Actually it was badly written. I initially thought the same thing.

He grew pot under lights. Not really a factory. Good on him, and a fair sentence.

did the thieves get caught? did they get off because this crime was "more important"?

i heard a story about someone who had grass in their home. quite a lot. the police raided and took it but when it went to court they only declared finding half of it...where did the other half go? it was not handed in as evidence.

as it goes, he got a lesser sentance as only half was given as evidence but still, its not the point. is it

It helps his eczema. Why shouldn't he grow it? Who does this "crime" affect except the moral vigilantes who want to police everyone's thoughts.
