Doctors Slaughtered for "Proselytising" in A-Stan

I grieve for the group's families and also the people this team were helping. Very sad news.

KABUL, Afghanistan – They hiked for more than 10 hours over rugged mountains — unarmed and without security — to bring medical care to isolated Afghan villagers until their humanitarian mission took a tragic turn.
Ten members of the Christian medical team — six Americans, two Afghans, one German and a Briton — were gunned down in a gruesome slaughter that the Taliban said they carried out, alleging the volunteers were spying and trying to convert Muslims to Christianity. The gunmen spared an Afghan driver, who recited verses from the Islamic holy book Quran as he begged for his life.

^If you read more reporting on the subject, it really doesn't appear that they were trying to convert anyone. One of the doctors had lived and worked in the country for more than 30 years, and the others were all professionals, many of them with deep ties to the country. They sound much more like the French group, Doctors Without Frontiers, or the US Operation Smile people. They certainly weren't some fly-by-night fundamentalist group. In many ways, it appears that robbery, rather than religion, was behind this despicable crime. They sound like people who were doing a hard and thankless job in a dangerous place. RIP.

^ Exactly. Apparently, they were murdered because a few members had Bibles with them. I posted the link so folks could read more.

Thanks for posting, such a sad and tragic story; the first half of this decade I was employed recruiting doctors to NZ from overseas, generally UK and US, quite often they would take a break (if that's what you can call it) between their hospitals and ours with a volunteer organisation such as Medecins San Frontieres/Doctors without Frontiers or similar.
I have nothing but admiration for them; I remember attending a presentation given by a youing English woman doctor/emergency physician who had spent 6mths in Sudan, working in dreadful conditions and daily dealing with gunshots, children with amputations by machete etc. I guess after that anything she saw in a city emergency clinic would be easier to cope with.
Very sad as incidents such as this may discourage further such volunteers.

^ That's heart-warming - all the folks who do this work are exceptional people in every way.
^^ Davis, just tried to summarise the title. Think it rings true, but who really knows.

I like Dr Tim, the leader -- he was in A-stan 30 yrs, spoke Dari, was known among the people. What a bladdy dam waste. And too bladdy sad.

they were working for a christian organization in afghanistan.....during a war that many of the locals view as a war on islam.

    and they were carrying bibles.

based on what's been reported, it seems they were good people, but they're also nominees for this year's darwin awards.

Although one might discount these victims as stupid or "Darwin Award" candidates, please keep in mind that weird infectious diseases usually come out of places where medical care is lacking. These diseases eventually make their way into populated areas. Remember SARS? How about Ebola? Here were a bunch of Christians that were putting their beliefs into action and caring for those that I personally would just ignore.

Murdering terrorist scum should be run through a meat-grinder and their children forced to eat them before then being treated to the same fate. Fuck Islam and the untidy, malodourous and diseased camel it rode in on.

Don't worry Jet. They are only showing tolerance and love teached from their paedo, illiterate and barbaric prophet. Nothing to worry at all.

    1. Whoever runs around Afghanistan without an escort must lack basic survival skills.
    2. Having Bibles with them won't win points with Taliban.
    3. It seems more and more the perps were common criminals.

They must have had great faith in their maker.

Re MSF, they do very careful risk evaluations before entering difficult 'theatres'. They'd never make amateurish mistakes such as these eye doctors.

Som nam na. Do gooders getting what was coming to them.

BBC News: Shot UK medical worker identified as Dr Karen Woo.

I hardly think the death of Dr Karen is a cause for celebration.

som nam na, Pot? Is that only because they were Christians? It's not confirmed if they were carrying Bibles, but even if they were, it would be the same as a Jew or a muslim carrying their holy books for their own use.
The head doctor had been doing this work for 30 years in A-stan.
BTW, has anyone ever heard of a muslim group conducting humanitarian work like this in a poor country, whatever the religion of the place?
If this crime was done by common criminals, I think they would have just looted and why not take the vehicles, too? I'd say mozzie terrorists at it, AGAIN.

Better to expend humanitarian efforts in places where its wanted. Time to pack up and leave A- Stan to work out its own future. If they want to live like its the 9th century let them.

Mebbe some of those folks want help? Guess we could all go to Haiti where we've been helping for how many years and they still don't improve.

If the culture is predominantly anti-western and they violently reject our civilization it makes no sense to put innocent NGO staff at risk. It is tragic that many do want assistance but the risks are just too great.

I don’t think the majority of the Afghan population is anti-westerner to the point of condoning this massacre. Certainly the people in the very remote part of the country they had just visited were not resentful. But there is little the majority can do while there are armed groups running around capable of these actions.

Apparently the group did have an escort but let them go once they reached the area of the massacre as they felt secure since they had worked many times around there and never felt threatened.

Reports are they were tortured and shot multiple times. Undoubtedly the women were raped as well. Wonder if a video, which these people like to do so much will be released soon.

Hopefully there is a squad or two of SEALs and/or special services tracking these people down as we speak, though we will probably never hear about it.

My mate really fancied this girl from work and asked my advice on what to do. I told him she's an old fashioned girl and he should woo her.

So he flew her to Afghanistan and executed her by the side of the road.

God, that was awful. "woo her"...indeed!
