Muslim parents keep kids from swim class

Muslim parents keep kids from swim class

    July 30, 2010

Officials in the Swiss city of Basel have fined five Muslim families for refusing to allow their daughters to attend compulsory swimming classes in school, Swiss news agency ATS reports.
The parents had refused on "religious grounds" to allow their daughters, all of whom were under 10, to take part in the mixed-gender classes, Christoph Eymann, the head of city's education department, said on Thursday.
In another case, the girl had taken holidays instead of swimming classes even though it was outside the regular school vacation period.
Eymann said Basel offers separate classes for children who have reached the age puberty, but for younger children, mixed classes were justified, according to consultations with religious organisations.
Each parent has been fined 350 francs ($A380) per child.
If the offence is repeated, a new fine could be imposed.

    ^ they may be 'home'.
Nothing to say a Swiss national cannot be Muslim.

I wonder if the dress restrictions are the issue; I've taught water safety/swimming here and often the younger kids (non-Muslim) have worn full lycra suits.

I wear a long-sleeve lycra top for sunburn protection - a morning standing in the pool can fry the skin. Though this may not be such an issue in Switzerland.

I don't think its unreasonable for swiss society to require everyone to learn to swim, and they have decided to segregate teens, which does have some practical arguments in its favour.

Whilst I am sure that from the parents perspective they are simply trying to protect their children's morals. From alternative perspective they could be seen as attempting to get the government to enforce the kind of a muslim apartheid system; not that dissimilar to pre civil rights north america. In a society where people, on the whole, have fought for and believe in equality for the sexes and races; this is asking too much.

Living in a society means compromises on both sides, but there will always be areas such as marrying 9 year olds, requiring black people/women to sit at the back of the bus, the use of contraceptives where a compromise between the two views is not possible. You have 3 choices here: accept the view of the majority, fight the system or leave. For a family, that want segregation in a european society, I would recommend leave as your going to loose this battle.

Without being too unkind I would suggest that these parents consider the advantages of living in a country such as saudi arabia; where not only will they be able to ensure their daughters are never forced to look at a male, at 10 they will be considered to be of marriageable age and they can probably kill her if she does start looking at men. If switzerland's become their hell may be this could be their heaven.

If they want to life in a 'shadow-society' and don't want to adapt they are not 'home' and should go where their 'home' is.

Don't see how not allowing kids to learn swimming is in any way protecting their morals.

They don't want their kids mixing with those of the opposite sex, because they might become attracted to them, and then they might not be able to marry them off to their brother's children so they can keep the wealth (and the congenital defects) in the family.

Strange but true (not the congenital defects bit, that's just a py product).

    Of course it's BS.

Let them pay the fine again and again until they realize they need to adapt.

Why can the school not accommodate separate classes ?

    Then everyone would be happy.

Because the parents in question are being dicks.
My wife and daughter swim with every bugger else regardless as to gender or religion. Same goes for most other Muslims I know.
These people just go too far.

(That's always assuming the story is true. The press do have a habit of making things up as I've shown before)
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

Arrogant and unreasonable Western Governments are much more repulsive and much more of a concern to me than Muslims. Switzerland is landlocked, so why the swimming requirement? The Courts will hopefully require them to provide separate classes to accommodate peoples religious beliefs.

If you support other people's rights being arrogantly and willfully ignored, who will care when they (the Government) ignore your rights?

why should some people have the right to ignore the law or the rules just because they choose to according to prohibitions they make up for themselves, and then make an issue out of. As Mr Fred said these people are dicks.

FFS. That's why countries are feked now. Gotta please everybody. NO. Here are the standard rules. Like 'em or leave. Is that so difficult these days? We need a Simon Cowell in government.

Switzerland is not a muslim country, there is no need for separate classes. The Swiss education system is quite good, so take it for free or leave!

No, there are decent Muslims and this is not something they thought of just to get out of PE. The Government should be obligated to provide separate male/female classes or waive the requirement upon parental demand. Respect for other peoples religions, no matter how silly we think they are is part of being a civilized society.

well if the book says they are old enough to marry at 9, then they are old enough to have bad thoughts. hence the need to segregate them for their moral protection. BS but there's a logic too it

This reminds me of when my father worked for the inner london education authority in the 1970's one of his schools had a Muslim teacher who wanted friday afternoons off for prayer. They refused, there was a big fuss and the thing ended up at an tribunal, complete with big lawyer bills, that the teacher won.

He was reinstated and given his friday afternoon off which he took until he got his pay check. On finding that he had lost 10% of his salary, he decided that this right he had fought for so hard was no longer necessary.

    Link?

In fact Friday prayers take less than an hour. Either this bloke was trying it on or the story is bullshit.

Given this is a UK story. I wonder what would happen if I looked up the number of sub 16 year old married Muslim girls against the number of sub 16 year old non Muslim girls on the pill/pregnant/teen mum/being treated for STDs.

It's a common lie spread around that Muslims all shag 9 year old wives. In fact it's illegal and considered seriously anti fucking social in most Muslim countries.

Why are swimming lessons compulsory? If this had happened in the US there'd be an uproar about the guvmint forcing citizens to do things they don't want to do. If the local council busybodies came round to my house and told me I'd got to attend 'compulsory' swimming lessons I'd tell them to go and fukc themselves.
