A TWO-storey treehouse set in a lush garden has won Singaporean landscape designer John Tan a Best of Show award at this year's Singapore Garden Festival.

This is the first time that the 50-year-old founder and creative landscape director of Esmond Landscape and Horticulture is participating in the festival as a designer.

He said: 'It blew my mind. Winning this shows that Singaporean designers are as good as international ones.'

Two other designs in different categories also won Best Of Show awards, which come with no prize money.

Singaporean designer Damian Tang topped the Fantasy Gardens category with The Mysterious Jungle Of Pandora, which he says was inspired by the movie Avatar.

In the Floral Windows to the World category for floral displays, German Brigitte Heinrichs took the top prize with Design With Nature, which uses multicoloured flowers to evoke emotions.

The three top winners received their awards last night from President S R Nathan at the Awards Gala, held at Suntec Convention Centre. Also present was Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development.
