Liberia deputy speaker 'under house arrest'

Liberian deputy parliament speaker Togba Mulbah has been placed under house arrest for allegedly ordering the beating of a policeman.

Police surrounded Mr Mulbah's house in the capital Monrovia to arrest him. Police say the officer was beaten unconscious after trying to impound Mr Mulbah's vehicle on Saturday.

Mr Mulbah, a member of an opposition party, denies the allegations.

He told the BBC police had raided his house and taken away five people.

Police officials alleged it was the third time Mr Mulbah had ordered attacks on police "and he must be arrested this time to answer questions".

Details of Saturday's incident in the capital remain sketchy.
