Monkey Phobia Woman Savaged By Macaques

A British woman who went to a Thai nature resort to conquer her fear of monkeys has been savaged by a pack of macaques.

Dee Darwell, 56, lost consciousness after the monkeys surrounded her and sank their teeth into her arms and body.
Many of the primates remained hanging from her limbs as she lay collapsed with blood spurting from a "deep, deep hole" in her arm.
She was eventually rescued by Thai boatmen and was taken to Bangkok Phuket Hospital.
The horrific attack happened on Monkey Island near to the popular holiday island of Phuket in southern Thailand.
"I thought I was heading for safety under this rock in the shade, only to cool down," Mrs Darwell, from Peterborough, said.
"I laid the towel down and there were no monkeys in sight.
"The next thing I noticed, this monkey walked up next to me and I thought, oh dear, and I began to stand up to move away.
"Then, the monkey took my wrist and pounced on my right arm, sinking his teeth in and hung off it.
"He wouldn't let go; he was locked on. I was absolutely petrified."
Thai fishermen ran to the rescue after spotting more monkeys joining the assault and began prising them off.
Mrs Darwell said she had agreed to go on the Siam Sea Canoe tour with a friend to confront her fear of monkeys.
Her phobia had been triggered by her father bringing up a chimpanzee which she described as "positively evil".
She said: "I thought, this is it, I'm going to die, I'm going to be savaged by these monkeys - then I went into shock."
Mrs Darwell added: "I wouldn't have got off that bloody boat if the tour guide would have said at all that there was any danger, any risk, even the slightest risk."
Tour leader Mr Yongyut Buasod said: "We can't control the monkeys if they decide to bite someone, that's why we always warn the tourists.
"That day some people were teasing the monkeys. They don't necessarily attack the specific person teasing them."

They could see her fear, and macaques accustomed to humans aren't afraid.

Just as with dogs, you must be calm and unconcerned, which she obviously wasn't.

Monkeys are unpredictable animals and should not be trusted any more than a wild dog, I hate the little bastards.

She could have gone to a zoo and got over her phobia through plate glass windows.

But no, she decided on the face to face method.

Stupid woman. She was probably sweating some sort of scared hormone that only the minkies could smell.

I am scared of clowns (see lounge) but i would never go to a circus filled with scary clowns to get over my phobia.

    I love monkeys.

But have been in the same situation as the lady in question, in Kenya, where they come and sit and stare at you and steal from you. Just stay calm and have no food on you. And stare back. I sat like a statue with my morning coffee on the balcony and there were about 12 monkeys there too. They were mesmerising to watch. And only one approached me to steal my cigarette lighter, which i found later on thrown on the ground.

I hate 'em. Nasty things. Knew a guy who had one in Vietnam. It used to go around screwing all the chickens on the firebase. If they wouldn't give it up, it would kill them. A dog finally did for his monkey ass.

He had a pet Gibbon....would ride everywhere with him on his bike.

One night in a bar, he met a guy with his farang wife and he said to my mate...se that Thai girl over there, I want to shag her. My missus is ok with it as we have an open relationship, only thing is if i shag the thai girl, I need someone to shag the missus .......do you wanna do it ?

Mate said yes, went back to their hotel. The guy and the Thai girl used the bed, mate and farang missus went out onto the balcony.

My mate had to leave his monkey somewhere, so he sat him on the dresser table to watch.

Mates missus went around town looking for him, asked at all the bars and hotels if they had seen a guy with a monkey.

She found the hotel, went up floor by floor and called out my mates name.

Now, thing is this monkey would go 'WOOOOP' every time he heard my mates name called.

So his missus was calling louder and louder. Monkey heard her.....went 'WOOOOP'.....missus got closer to the room and the louder the missus called, the louder the moneky went 'WOOOOP WOOOOP WOOOOOP'....until she was outside the door and could hear the monkey inside.

    Busted.

This was 20 plus years ago when Phuket was much smaller.

The monkey screwed chickens ? I reckon Norty's story is more likely than that.

It's a nice change to read about tourists being assaulted by vicious monkeys in Phuket that, erm, don't operate taxis or jet skis.

^^^^Was that a guy and his wife who used to drive their bike down beach road in Patong about 5PM every afternoon with the monkey riding along? If so, I saw them many times around 88-90.

Dunno...could well be....although might be a few years late.

Think he has been here 30 odd years and this would have been somewhere around the 25/30 years ago.

Dogs and monkeys don't like each other much, do they? In Japan the expression for "(fighting like) cats and dogs" is "dogs and monkeys." Do the Thais use a similar expression? I could ask my local authority, but she is trying to convince our monkey to take his nap.

When I was a kid, I always thought I wanted a pet monkey. Then I met one.

The owner of a guest house where I was staying had a pet monkey. She was the cutest little thing ever dressed in her little pink dress. Made me start thinking about monkey ownership again.

A customer at the guest house gave the little monkey a packet of candies. The monkey couldn't open the candies and started screaming like crazy. She didn't stop screaming for ages and would not let the owner have the candies to open the box for her. When he finally did grab the box, she bit him on the finger causing a really nasty wound. He had to be taken to the local hospital to be stitched up.

I haven't wanted a monkey since. Just can't reason with them.

Better that she blames she insanity on some monkey. Most farang women blame a man for all their problems.

Was someplace (don't remember what country) with my wife a few years ago and we were at a temple with a lot of monkeys. I gave them a wide berth. A stupid Japanese tourist girl kept teasing them by holding out bananas, and then pulling them back. She finally put the bananas in her backpack, and put it on and started to leave. A monkey jumped on top of her backpack and bit her ear, almost ripping it off. Pretty bloody, but in my opinion also pretty well deserved. Don't mess with wild animals.

I love monkeys but don't think they should be kept as pets at all. They're wild animals...and as for dressing them up and treating them like a child

I used to have a pet monkey, damn strong and she hated women, wouldn't like to have seen her get hold of a woman or girl.

Driving from Nyala to Zalingi you go through a gorge, infested with primates, no idea what species, but quite big. Baboons I believe.

They leap off the rocks onto the passing vehicles and start bashing ripping and tearing at what ever they can get hold of.

The first time was fokin scary.

The second time we were a bit more blase.

After that it was a sport.
