Canadian Mounties' Taser Killing of Polish Man - "Unjustified"

Canada stun gun death 'not justified'

According to the video, before his death, Mr Dziekanski asked the policemen in Polish: "Have you lost your minds?" - Testimony from inquiry.

Canadian police officers were not justified in using a Taser gun on a Polish immigrant at Vancouver airport, an inquiry has found.

Robert Dziekanski, who did not speak English, died after being stunned five times with a Taser in 2007.

British Columbia's attorney general said a special prosecutor would examine the possibility of criminal charges against the four officers involved.
The case sparked outrage across Canada.

Mr Dziekanski, 40, was a first-time traveller who had been emigrating to Canada, where his mother lived.

He disappeared for several hours at Vancouver airport, and grew distressed when he was told by an official that his mother was not there.

Airport workers called police after he threw a computer and a chair.

    'Shameful'

Thomas Braidwood, the head of the inquiry commission, said police had not been justified in using the Taser, and that Mr Dziekanski had not posed a threat to the officers, as had been claimed.

He said that the five jolts and the ensuing struggle with police had "contributed substantially to Mr Dziekanski's death".

The inquiry was set up after a video, filmed by a bystander, was released to the media.

Mr Braidwood said the video "shocked and repulsed people around the world".
According to the video, before his death, Mr Dziekanski asked the policemen in Polish: "Have you lost your minds?"

The commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, William Elliott, apologised to Mr Dziekanski's mother, Zofia Cisowski.

"I would like to express sincere regrets and apologise unconditionally for the role of the RCMP in this tragic death.

"Our policies and training were inadequate. The actions of our officers were inappropriate," he said at a news conference.

One of the officers involved is already suspended due to an investigation into a separate incident, while the other three remain in their positions but are not involved in "front-line policing", he said.

These stun guns have become a toy for cops who are too lazy to arrest someone the old fashioned way. I hope they are prosecuted, and maybe his family can get a large settlement out of the company that markets these terrible things as a "safe" alternative to deadly force.

I too wonder why several police were unable to take down some unarmed guy the old fashioned way - man handle him. Don't they train police about that in Canada anymore? The Polish guy's comments on the video tape are just right on.. they have lost their minds - and the plot, or so it seems in Canada (and probably many other places too - certainly the U.S.)

I don't know, but it only takes a small amount of electricity to put your heart into fibrillation, at which point the blood to the brain and heart tissue ceases to circulate and death follows within 5 minutes, usually before paramedics can arrive. All police used to be trained in CPR, which can save a person in fibrillation, but apparently these officers could not be bothered to administer it. I used to litigate police abuse cases as an attorney.

Common sense would suggest that a guy inside an airport, arriving off a flight from somewhere else is most certainly not armed. So it appears there are several of these cops versus one guy - even if a big guy - and they couldn't manhandle him?

What's next? Send in a robotic drone mini-airplane to shoot him so the Canadian Mounties don't break a fingernail?

So, after 3 years? No wonder the Canadians have nothing better to do than trash-talk Americans.

Five times??? Where is the justification in that?

Good that they understand and accept their inadequate approach

Umm, why would the manufacturers be sued? Surely it is the unsafe handling of the weapon that was the killing factor.

As an aside, can't these things be set to various 'strengths'? I have no idea about that

I'm with the Mounties. The guy was in our international airport going berserk. Did they need the "overkill" in tasering him? Likely not, but better safe than sorry. Fek, our cops are hamstrung by bleeding heart lefties and a feked judicial system that let's murders, rapist and thugs off with a slap on the wrist. These same lefties then go on to stage their own fisticuffs with each other in superstores when we have water problems.

I love the RCMP. Always helped me when I needed them.

Yep, the airport union folks had several hours to do that checking before the guy went cuckoo; the info was not passed to the RCMP. And where was his immigrant mommy who was supposed to meet him and then made a nice tidy sum out of the deal?

^ hehe. Hat tip to ya, Agent.
FFS, Wilson. I am sick and tired of folks whining about people's rights and bashing police and military. Is every job done perfectly? No. Do the cops and armed guys have to deal with potentially deadly situations everyday? Yes. Do our protectors also have to deal with crybaby people who have no idea what it's like on the job for our protectors? YES. I'll side with the RCMP.

And so they should be . . . possibly for manslaughter . . . let them go down for their crime of taking an innocent life. Five times on a middle aged guy who had been through x-rays and checkpoints.

Just a casual observation, but it would seem Canada's freebie mental health care budget is better off without some needy whacko like you Jetster. ( But I can tell that you would never stoop so low as to receive the freebie - nope you go to the U.S. and pay Dr Silverstein for his services )

I guess this means you also agree that families whose loved ones have been shot and killed by wreckless handgun use should be able to get a large settlement from the producers of those as well?

Well let`s just hope that the next time you approach them for help that they don`t misconstrue your purpose and taser you 5 times. For Gawds sake even their boss has apologised for their behaviour.
