    Joran Van der Sloot confesses

Police: Dutchman confesses to killing Lima woman - Yahoo! News

LIMA, Peru – Dutchman, long the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of a U.S. teen in Aruba, has confessed to killing a young Peruvian woman in his Lima, a police spokesman said.
Peru's chief police spokesman, Col. Abel Gamarra, told The Associated Press that Van der Sloot admitted under questioning Monday that he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores on May 30.
Several Peruvian media reported that Van der Sloot killed Flores in a rage after learning she had looked up information about his past on his laptop without his permission. They did not name their sources for the information.
The newspaper said that he tearfully confessed, in the presence of a prosecutor and a state-appointed attorney, to grabbing Flores by the neck and hitting her because she had viewed photos and videos about the Aruba case on his computer while he was out buying coffee.
Gamarra would not provide details of the confession. Nor would the chief of Peru's criminal police, Gen. Cesar Guardia, when the AP reached him by telephone. Guardia said only Gen. Miguel Hidalgo could authorize the information to be divulged. Hidalgo's cell phone rang unanswered.
Asked about the Van der Sloot confession, a brother of the victim, told the AP "we are not going to make any comment. This is in the hands of the police, of the justice system."
Van der Sloot's confession came on his third full day in Peruvian, on the eve of a planned trip to the hotel in which he was to participate in a reconstruction of the events leading to Flores' slaying, Gamarra said.
Flores, a business student, was found beaten to death, her neck broken, in the 22-year-old Dutchman's hotel room. Police said the two met playing poker at a casino.
Video from shows the two entering Van der Sloot's hotel room together at 5 a.m. Saturday and Van der Sloot leaving alone four hours later with his bags. Police say Van der Sloot also left the hotel briefly at 8:10 a.m. and returned with two cups of coffee and bread purchased across the street at a supermarket.
Gamarra said the case would now be turned over to prosecutors to present formal charges and Van der Sloot will be assigned to a prison while he awaits trial. Murder convictions carry a maximum of 35 years in prison in Peru and it was not immediately clear if a confession could lead to a.

Van der Sloot remains the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, then 18, on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba while she was celebrating her high school graduation.
He was arrested twice in the case — and gave a number of conflicting confessions, some in TV interviews — but was freed for lack of evidence.
Holloway's father told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that Van der Sloot should tell all he knows about the disappearance of his daughter.
"He confessed to this one ... I would like for him to tell everyone what happened" in the earlier case, Dave Holloway said. "Hopefully this is his last victim."

He is 2X the size of the typical Peruvian inmate. He is young and in good health. His family will supply enough money to see that he has basic nutrition and funds for bribing people during his incarceration. I would be more worried about the other prisoners than him. He'll have a few of the weaker kids working as his bitches within a year. He's a charming guy and I am sure he will put that qualiiy to work as he manipulates those less ruthless and cunning than him.

The guy is obviously mentally ill. When he gets out he will kill again unless he gets the medical treatment he needs. I guarantee that he will have dozens of women and gay men writing to him in prison, sending money and even marriage proposals. Guys like that always do.

^Size doesn't mean much when it's 25 to one. His Mommy may send him care packages, but the guards will take them. He will have a hard time being charming as he barely speaks the language. The dead girl's Dad (the Peruvian dead girl) will certainly be able to organize a welcoming committee without problem. I very much doubt that he survives for long.

    He speaks fluent Spanish.

Fernando Ovalle, the Chilean police official in charge of the suspect's detention and deportation, said Van der Sloot gave a statement Friday in fluent Spanish "denying all participation in the charges leveled against him" in the Peru murder.

^Apologies. I read in a news article that his Spanish language ability was limited. Still, doubt that it will make much difference in the long run.

    Conflicting reports.

    One he does.

He speaks Spanish fluently and we took a statement from him in Spanish, where he denies any involvement and the charges brought against him,” Chilean Investigative Police Officer Fernando Ovalle Gatica said in a statement. “Naturally, he needs to face the murder that took place here and if the courts find him responsible for that murder, he will have to fulfill his sentence here,” President Alan Garcia said in a statement. “Don’t worry, this murderer will pay. He will pay for what he’s done,” Stephany’s father Ricardo Flores said.

Second one, but by the truck driver who gave him the ride.

He gave a truck driver 1,500 Peruvian soles ($525) to take him from Ica, a town south of Lima, to the Chilean border, the driver, Luis Aparcana, said in a TV interview. He said van der Sloot didn't speak Spanish very well and carried two suitcases.

The only report that says his Spanish is not great, comes from a truck driver who he caught a lift from. He probably speaks better Spanish than the truck driver.

More likely the truck driver is indigenous. And fluent is a loose term these days. There could well be someone's agenda attached to his being fluent.

He's from Aruba. Spanish is widely spoken on Aruba. It's quite logical that he would speak good Spanish.

Sorry, yes some there speak Spanish. Learning Spanish on Aruba and speaking it to a Peruvian Indian is like a stoned Jamaican at a Presbyterian church congregation in Newfoundland . Fluency demands more, mate. If you spoke Castillano to a Mexican he'd laugh in your face then kick your ass, some goes for Argentinian Spanish.

I'm just noting the police are happy to say he confessed, they understood every word he said and he understood every word they said. There was perhaps no interpreter present. That's an advantage for the lawman.

I'm impressed at the intimate knowledge you seem to have of how the Peruvian prison system works . . .

Dont take this the wrong way, quite the opposite in fact, but you do not know to much about the goings on in prison, he will be completely at the mercy of the prison gangs, his money might be able to buy him some amnesty but thats just for them not to hurt him as long as he keeps paying up, they might even give him some protection but that is not assured it depends on the gangs he might have to pay every gang to just leave him alone.

Peruvian prisons are notorious hell holes, riddled with corrupt guards and armed prisoners, he will probably end up in Piedras Gordas the prison with the most dangerous peruvian criminals, it will be no picnic and nothing will be for free.

^Pretty grim. How do you know the above is where he will be sent? From several news outlets, it appears that there are 3 or 4 options, and that it will not be decided until after he is convicted.

In the first vid they said there were 1500 prisoners housed in a section made for 180. Never enough food to go around, constant acts of violence. Virtually no medical treatment. Last time there was an uprising there 200 inmates were shot dead by the guards. Some have been there years without a trial. Probably the largest prison in the Americas. Not to be compared with anything we know of in Europe or America. Maybe the toughest prison in the world.

Joran Van Der Sloot Suspected of Thailand Sex Trade Connection and Possible Killings
    July 10, 2010

Suspected Murderer Van Der Sloot May Have Killed Thai Prostitutes, Says 'National Enquirer'

While Joran Van Der Sloot awaits a judge's decision in Lima, Peru, that might see him released from prison, law enforcement officials in Thailand have been investigating the 22-year-old Dutch national's connection with sex trafficking and the possible disappearance of several young Thai women in 2008.

According to the National Enquirer, Joran Van Der Sloot allegedly recruited women for the sex trade while he lived in Thailand in 2008. According to Thai police sources, several young women went missing while he was there and they are investigating to see if he may have been involved.

Joran Van Der Sloot, currently in a Peruvian prison after being arrested on suspicion of murdering 21-year-old Stephanie Flores Ramirez in May, set up shop in Bangkok, Thailand, after Aruban authorities failed to charge him is the disappearance of 18-year-old Alabama high school student Natalee Holloway. Although arrested twice, Van Der Sloot was released both times due to lack of evidence.

In Bangkok, Van Der Sloot posed as a production consultant for a modeling agency, sources told the National Enquirer. A source within Thai law enforcement noted,"There are girls who went missing in Bangkok while van der Sloot was there. Thai investigators are looking into whether he might have been involved." The source said that many young women often are killed in the sex trade, especially if they threaten to go to the police or resist their recruiters.

"Many of these girls have no legal documents. If they go missing, nobody notices. It's easy to kill them, hide the bodies and get away with it."

But the sex trade story is not a new one. Some believed Joran Van Der Sloot may have sold Natalee Holloway into slavery in 2005. The story that arose via the Dutchman's activities in Thailand only seemed to substantiate what had theretofore been only suppositions.
