Libyan executions of foreigners are condemned

Libyan executions of foreigners are condemned

Human rights campaigner group Amnesty International has condemned the reported execution of 18 people in Libya.

The 18, some from Chad, Egypt and Nigeria, were executed on Sunday in Tripoli and Benghazi, Libyan media reported.

Amnesty International said they feared the accused had not had fair trials.

The people were convicted of murder and executed by firing squad, the Libyan Cerene newspaper said.

"In Libya we fear that death sentences are handed down after proceedings which fail to satisfy international standards for fair trial," a statement from the organisation said.

Foreign nationals are at a disadvantage in the Libyan legal system, Amnesty said.
They often do not have access to lawyers and do not understand the trial proceedings because they are not translated from Arabic.

Libya executes a disproportionately large number of foreigners, Amnesty said.

Each year thousands of African migrants travel cross the Sahara desert to Libya with the hope of one day reaching Europe .

I have worked in Libya, and had to pass through Tripoli on numerous occasions. Although I used to spend a couple of days onshore prior to going to work, there were always issues with other Africans who managed to cross the border into Libya.

Its a long way to travel from Nigeria, Chad and the other countries when you know the border crossings are closed.

Once you are in Libya you are at the mercy of the people who hire thr boats to get you to the promised land (Europe and UK). aLL iwill say is that I am sick to death of fishing people including mothers and babies out of the Mediterranean Sea as the try to escape from Africa.

Lampedusa Island is the nearest international border to Libya and its Italian.

God knows how few people have survived this journey. All I will say is that I know and have seen in excess of eighty deaths with personnel transiting via the oil field I worked on.

The rules from the Libyan government and the Oil Company were give them water and blankets, only in the event of an emergency were they to be taken on board and then they would be repatriated to Libya and await deportation to their country of origin

Not sur what that meant in Libya, as its sometimes possible to disappear if you are a foreigner.

    What they are capable of?

I have worked Libya, Chad Niger border region.
Truck load of monetary refugees broke down at the end of our lease road.
About a hundred men women children and babies on this 5 ton truck with all their possesions. 42 degrees, no shade, except under the truck on the pavement.
They were in need of a litre of brake fluid to repair the clutch.
Rig Manager, national, told them to go Fucck themselves. We inturn told him to go fuck himself and got em going with water, couple cases of tuna some bread and milk for the kiddies. Got photos, just don't know how to post em.
Even when you see how they are treated with your own eyes and to what lengths people will go too, to survive, it is still hard to fathom!
Just one of the stories of how national pride dictates your actions to citizens of another country. Foreigners are less than, way less than.
Arogence + stupidity = 90% of the Nationals. Very dangerous mix!

Maybe the humanitarians can organize a flotilla to protest this state of affairs?

Oh wait, most of these people are african with dark pigmentation. Nevermind. European liberals only get misty eyed if these people are crawling on the ground starving, and arabs only see them as worthy of being slaves.

Carry on Col G. Carry on. No flotilla threat to worry about.
