Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

Page last updated at 6:34 GMT, Monday, 31 May 2010 7:34 UK

Footage obtained by Turkish television from onboard appears to show armed Israeli officers wearing masks.

More than 10 people have been killed after Israeli commandos stormed a convoy of ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says.
Armed forces boarded the vessels overnight, clashing with some of the 600 protesters on board.
The exact location of the interception is unclear. Israel had warned the ships not to enter its territorial waters.
The ships are carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid to try to break a long-standing Israeli-led blockade.
Israel says its forces were attacked by activists when they got on board.
"The people on the boats were very, very violent toward the soldiers," Israeli military spokeswoman Lt Col Avital Leibovich was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Organisers of the flotilla said at least 30 people were wounded in the incident.
    Condemnation

An Israeli government minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, was reported as expressing regret for "all the fatalities".

Turkey, one of whose charities is a main organiser of the flotilla, said it "strongly condemn[ed] these inhumane practices of Israel", AFP said.
Turkish TV pictures taken on board the Turkish ship leading the flotilla appeared to show Israeli soldiers fighting to control passengers.
The footage showed a number of people, apparently injured, lying on the ground. It is not clear whether the fighting is continuing.

Al-Jazeera TV reported from the same ship that Israeli navy forces had fired and boarded the vessel, wounding the captain.

The Al-Jazeera broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, saying: "Everybody shut up!"
    'Provocation'

The six-ship flotilla left international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday and was expected to arrive in Gaza later on Monday.
Israel has said it would stop the boats, calling the campaign a "provocation intended to delegitimise Israel".
An economic blockade was imposed by Israel after the Islamist movement Hamas took power in Gaza.
Israel says it allows about 15,000 tones of humanitarian aid into Gaza every week.
But the United Nations says this is less than a quarter of what is needed.

Yep protecting themselves by killing unarmed civilians carrying food to people who are being illegally blockaded.
I do hope this turns out to have happened in international waters. The UN may actually be forced to get of their collective fat fucking arses and do something positive.

Up to 16 killed as Israeli forces storm aid convoy

    Updated 46 minutes ago
The flotilla was organised by pro-Palestinian groups and a Turkish human rights organisation. (AFP: Free Gaza Movement)

Up to 16 people have been killed when Israeli naval commandos boarded aid ships bound for the Gaza Strip, meeting resistance from pro-Palestinian activists, Israel's Channel 10 television said.
The six-ship convoy carrying aid for Palestinians and led by a Turkish vessel with 600 people on board set sail for Gaza from international waters off Cyprus on Sunday in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade of the territory.
There was no immediate comment from Israel, where public radio quoted an unnamed Arab journalist aboard a ship as saying the navy intercepted the activists and that shooting was heard.
Vice premier Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio that Israeli forces would issue a report soon.
"As far as we know IDF (Israeli military) commandos descended on the boat from helicopters and took it over," said Mary Hughes Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza Movement, which was behind the convoy.
An Israeli religious medical service, ZAKA, said seven people had been admitted to hospital in Haifa, Israel's main naval base, one of them in a serious condition.
Turkey says it has "strongly protested" against Israel's military action.
"[The interception on the convoy] is unacceptable ... Israel will have to endure the consequences of this behaviour," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It said Ankara had called Israel's ambassador to the ministry.
Israeli officials said overnight the navy told the activists by radio to turn back toward Cyprus or head for the Israeli port of Ashdod to unload the 10,000 tonnes of aid, which Israel would then transfer to the Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
The convoy set off in international waters off Cyprus on Sunday in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade of Gaza.
The flotilla was organised by pro-Palestinian groups and a Turkish human rights organisation.
Turkey had urged Israel to allow it safe passage and said the 10,000 tonnes of aid was humanitarian.
Israel had said it would prevent the convoy from reaching Gaza.
Egypt and Israel tightened a blockade on Gaza after Hamas took over the territory in 2007.
Israel launched a devastating military offensive in Gaza in December 2008 with the aim of halting daily rocket fire towards its cities.
Most of the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza rely on aid, blaming Israel for imposing restrictions on the amount and type of goods it allows into the territory.
The United Nations and Western powers have urged Israel to ease its restrictions to prevent a humanitarian crisis. They have been urging Israel to let in concrete and steel to allow for post-war reconstruction.
Israel denies there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying food, medicine and medical equipment are allowed in regularly.
It says the restrictions are necessary to prevent weapons and materials that could be used to make them from reaching Hamas.

Israel is a fascist state, no surprise they would "pre-empt" any perceived threats to further their fascist agenda

So nice people, it's really hard to believe.

The Unspoken Alliance: Israel’s Secret Relationship with Apartheid South Africa.
It would be hard for them to shrug off the fact that even when South Africa faced blanket international sanctions, one country continued to supply it copiously with arms and helped it to build a nuclear bomb: Israel.

Just saw on the evening news Israel is claiming the soldiers boarding the aid ships came under attack by protesters armed with knives, iron bars and an axe. Also claims of attacks against the soldiers with a pistol. Israel is claiming self defence on the part of the soldiers and is also claiming the protesters are terrorist sympathizers. Sounds remarkably similar to Abhisit.

I'm watching that on Al Jazeera at the moment.
Israeli is now admitting they attacked in international waters.
Al Jazeera had a reporter on that ship who said the IDF fired first and there were no shots from his ship he was aware of.
He also said the ship raised the white flag and surrendered but the IDF continued to fire on them.
This has to be an act of piracy.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

Interesting Hillary hasnt come out with some comment.
I am sure she will eventually make a statement expressing regret.

The ships were attacked and highjacked in international waters which constitutes an act of piracy under international law. Not that it would worry the Israelis since big brother will protect them from prosecution over this latest atrocity as always.

The Israeli government has a long and horrible record of flouting international laws, no reason to expect them to change their ways now.

DANIEL AYALON, ISRAELI DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER

The armada of hate and violence in support of [the] Hamas terror organisation was a premeditated and outrageous provocation. The organisers are well known for their ties with global jihad, al-Qaeda and Hamas. They have a history of arms smuggling and deadly terror.

This is true. They have now admitted an act of piracy and multiple murder way outside their waters.
The footage from several stations is showing the Israelis shooting at unarmed civilians even after a white flag was raised. The Turkish government is on TV telling the world that Israel is guilty of open lies about the aid ship opening fire. They say they inspected the ship before they left port and there were no weapons on board.

Nice to see Hillary Clinton attacking Israel - sorry I fucked up. Not a bastard word from the tart.

I'm no lover of Israel but I think they were justified in boarding those ships. Did the UK not board Libyan ships, in International waters, when on there way to Ireland ?

Believe it was in Irish waters but big difference is the ship was carrying arms. In this case, only food and medical supplies on board if as claimed.
