21 Thai Women Rescued from S.African Brothel

21 Thais rescued from S.Africa brothel

South African police have rescued 21 Thai women believed to be human trafficking victims from an alleged brothel, a spokesman said on Sunday.
"We suspect that they may be victims of human trafficking," said Paul Ramaloko, spokesman for the Hawks specialised crime-fighting unit.
"We really couldn't establish whether they are victims of trafficking or not so what we have done is we have removed them to a place of safety and then we are just going to conduct some interviews with them."

Police acted on a tip-off early Saturday morning that the women, who range from 23 to 27 years old, had been trafficked and were being sexually exploited in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, he said.
The women had all been in South Africa for less than a month.
A South African woman was arrested for operating an illegal brothel.
The Thai women's passports were recovered alongside cash and a small amount of heroin, said Ramoloko.
South Africa has beefed up anti-trafficking measures, including proposing its first direct legislation, and has set up regional police coordinators and task teams ahead of the football World Cup which starts on June 11.

    Can just imagine the scene...

21 Thai women dragged away kicking and screaming obsceneties at police for ruining their mega $ gig.

AIDS (and criminal) capital of the world can hardly be a wonderful destination for these girls.

Do you not think it's plausible that some (or all) of these women are working in SA by their own free will?

Sure, it's possible, however remote -- it's plausible that they signed on of their own free will, thinking they will be working as cocktail waitresses in posh resorts - it's highly doubtful that they would have remained enthusiastic after finding out that they are shoved into a brothel, to serve the local bottom feeders in the country with the highest AIDS rates around.

Quite frequent to see Thai guys driving around villages in expensive looking cars, to try to entice girls to sign up, with tales of riches and big tips. The only ones getting paid tips are these crooks virtually selling the girls into slavery.

Whilst I don't disagree with what you said, I personally know a fair few women who signed on the dotted line knowing perfectly well that they would end up in brothels servicing a multitude of punters every day. Dollar signs can do funny things to people.

However, I'm not at all disputing that some women get hired under false pretenses and end up regretting their decision once they realise what they've signed up for.

It remains to be seen if in this case the women were lied to or wether they knew perfectly well what they were getting themselves into.

I doubt very much that dollar signs click over when told "you will live in squalor and service diseased mine workers on the docks".

Most believe they will be servicing rich foreigners in posh resorts.

I agree that we really don't know. But as for your, "It remains to be seen if ..", it is unlikely that we will ever find out the whole story on this.

With regards to prostitution, much of the western world is increasingly adopting the stance that no woman could choose that lifestyle, and even the apparently willing are DRIVEN to it by their life-situation, thusly absolving them of the responsibility for the choice. So even if some of the women were begging to go (to SA), western medias will likely still portray them as the victims of "human trafficing" in continued support of the "agenda."

Quite often these women are presented with a huge debt upon arrival, and have their passports taken away. Before they can make any money of their own, the debt has to be serviced. After the debt has been serviced, they are usually fired, as the pimps no longer make as much off them.

Not when their passports were taken away

    "
The Thai women's passports were recovered .."

I'm sure some women like the prostitution lifestyle.
Seems plenty have websites advertising their business and get extraordinary amounts of tax free cash.
They probably are choosy about their clients, too and they can be as they are gorgeous and know how to market it.

Or maybe a few bar girls like the cash and party atmosphere, until they get herpes or a husband or whatever...

The there are women who live in situations where women over 35 aren't hired for minimum wage jobs - nor women who have dark skin, or don't have college degrees etc.
Maybe they have children with dead beat dads, etc., etc., etc..

Sound like any place we all know?

Sure they, " choose " to do it , like you " choose " to hand over your wallet to a mugger.
