BEIJING - A 13-YEAR-OLD American boy has become the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Everest.

A spokesman for Jordan Romero says the boy's team called by satellite phone from the summit of the world's highest peak on Saturday.

The previous record for the youngest climber to scale Everest had been held by Temba Tsheri of Nepal. He reached the peak at age 16.

Romero was climbing Everest with a team including his father and three Sherpa guides. He left for the peak from the base camp on the Chinese side of the mountain.

I was reading about this a few weeks back somewhere else, the consensus of opinion was that the sherpas were basically carrying him up the mountain.

Hopefully that wasn't the case and kudos to the kid if he did it, pretty cool.

Taking/allowing a 13 year old to such a dangerous venture seems dangerously irresponsible, but without knowing the kid/familly it's impossible to say.

Fine effort, if truly accomplished by the boy (rather than being carried up by helpers so the father can impress his mates).

That's a bit harsh in this case, Mt Everest is an incredible accomplishment. I probably had a better chance of doing it when I was 13 than I do now at 27 and I'm guessing he's been climbing since he can remember. He probably had little to carry though.

I'm not so sure about that any more, seems that any man and his dog can do it now. Actually, perhaps there has been a man and dog do it??

Seriously though, I read an article recently somewhere about just this very thing and how Everest has been 'commercialised' and anyone with the cash can climb it now. Apparently they regularly have to send teams up just to pick up the rubbish and crap left behind.

Sir Edmund would be rolling in his grave.
