30 Years For London Acid Attack Man

Mohammed Vakas was found guilty by an Old Bailey jury of plotting to murder Awais Akram.

Vakas attacked the 25-year-old after discovering he was in a relationship with his sister Sadia Khatoon.

Ms Khatoon, who was married at the time of the attack, had met Mr Akram through social networking site Facebook.

Vakas, his sister and her husband, Shakeel Abassi then plotted the attack on Mr Akram.

Awais Akram suffered third degree burns to 47% of his body

They confronted him near to his flat, stabbed him repeatedly and poured sulphuric acid down his throat and over his head.

The attack left Mr Akram in critical condition, fighting for his life in hospital.
He still faces further plastic surgery operations but will be permanently scarred.

Vakas, 26, of Walthamstow, north east London, was found guilty of conspiring
with Ms Khatoon and her husband to murder Mr Akram.

Judge Brian Barker said: "The facts of this case are horrifying. This was a remorseless and a heartless plan."

This was deemed to bring dishonour to her husband and to both families.
    Judge Brian Barker

He continued: "It was to punish and kill Mr Akram in the most cruel and sadistic way. The reason can be deduced as being an unacceptable relationship with Sadia Khatoon and Awais Akram.

"This was deemed to bring dishonour to her husband and to both families."

Fellow attackers Mohammed Adeel, 20, also of Walthamstow, and 17-year-old Fabion Kuci, of Harlesden, north west London, were convicted of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police are still seeking Sadia Khatoon, 24, who is believed to have plotted with husband Shakeel Abassi and lured Akram to the scene of the attack.

The pair are believed to have fled to Pakistan just hours after the attack.

Both are still wanted as suspects by the Metropolitan Policein conjunction with Interpol, the Foreign Office and local Pakistani police.

You ll get people sayin there are a few bad apples but time and time again they show their inability to live in a civilized society.

They bring their stone age values and expect us to put up with it.

As for the poor victim, doubt he ll ever get over it.

as the scum bags...Agree with the above.

You'll probably also get people pointing out that acts of barbarity and violence are exclusive to any one particular group.

And of course they'd be right.

I'm pretty sure that if the figures were collated you'd find one particular group was responsible for more of this type of act than any other.

I'm pretty sure they would too. But so what, unless we're going to catergorise and rank acts of violence according to severity and outcome? And if that's the case then how would this compare, just as an example, to being beaten, stabbed, and having your face slashed with a broken bottle -- more or less severe/worse do you think?

Ant, I understand your point but fights, stabbings and bottling s are in general random acts of drunken violence.

The acid attacks are planned with other family members women included. This is a standard punishment delt out by family based loss of face.

It is a growing problem in the UK now.

    That's obviously a clear concern.

In any event frankly if it were up to me this Varkas chap would've gotten a lot longer than 30yrs. They failed in a clear attempt to kill the victim and he'll presumably live longer than that with the effects/scarring.

What lovely people we allow into our country eh.

The people who do this should be banged up for ever, never to be let out, never to be given parole, they are amongst the most disgusting people in society, they shouldn't be allowed to roam amongst us.

I wonder what punishment the husband had in store for her when they got to Pakistan.
