Britain must fend for itself in event of crisis, French official warns

Britain must fend for itself in event of crisis, French official warns

Britain should not rely on EU help in the event of a renewed financial crisis after refusing to sign up to the bulk of a €500bn (£429bn) rescue package for the eurozone, the head of the French financial markets watchdog said.

Jean-Pierre Jouyet said the UK would have to fend for itself if ongoing political uncertainty led to a meltdown in the financial markets.
“The English are very certainly going to be targeted given the political difficulties they have. Help yourself and heaven will help you. If you don’t want to show solidarity to the eurozone, then let’s see what happens to the United Kingdom,” he told Europe 1 radio.

Mr Jouyet, European affairs minister from 2007-2008, was clearly angered by the Chancellor Alistair Darling’s refusal to pledge funds in an attempt to protect the euro, by failing to agree to provide troubled eurozone countries with €440bn in loans or guarantees.
He said it was a clear sign of the divisions within the European Union. “There is not a two speed Europe but a three speed Europe. You have Europe of the euro, Europe of the countries that understand the euro...and you have the English,” he said.
However, Mr Darling did agree to contribute to a €60bn extension to an existing European Union facility to help those countries in particular difficulty.
The International Monetary Fund has agreed to provide a further €250bn.
The bail-out agreement boosted markets around the world on Monday, including the FTSE 100 which closed up 5pc – the biggest one-day jump since December 8, 2008.
Part of that gain was unwound on Tuesday morning, with the FTSE 100 down 1.8pc at 5291. The pound was down at around $1.48.
As political uncertainty rumbled on, with no new government in place, analysts at Morgan Stanley said investors should sell the pound, targeting $1.35. It said the prospect of a Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition would hit sterling.
“We have decided to initiate a short pound-dollar position,” said Stephen Hull, global head of currency strategy. “This coalition would probably find it difficult to make the required tough spending cuts to the public deficit, risking a downgrade by the rating agencies in coming months.”

We are helping ourselves ta very much so you can take your Euro and wipe your arse with it. Solidarity to Europe is one thing , solidarity to the Euro is something else.

Anyway, we don't need any speculators to ' take us down ' , we're doing a good job of it ourselves.

Indeed, a rather odd reaction I'd suggest. I wasn't aware of any support for the Pound or the UK economy going the other way...anyone know of any?

The white flag waving tossers have never ever been anything other than a burden to Us British, as has most of the rest of Europe, we dont need there bail out scheme and never will, this deal would only serve to burden the British taxpayer still further.

It was a few months ago, but sterling bounced back. Not to what it was granted, but when the pigs take the Euro down, we`ll have the last laugh.

No problem. I doubt we`d get anything from Europe, if we paid up, and needed something back later on.

Its time for parity with our beloved French friends, charge them for driving on our motorways. And use a bit of Thai duel pricing system on them too.
Lets see if the UK can raise a few billion Euro's that way.

If the French stopped insisting on giving huge amounts of EU money to every soppy little French farmer with just 5 acres so he can have his own shiney new tractor. The EU would have enough funds to bolster the Greeks.

If the Greeks paid some income tax instead of cooking their books they wouldn't need help.

Yes some seems to think there are no reason to Party for the "Les Rosbifs" now, England chooses not to be part of the solution with whatever prize that might end up costing, and at the same time if the Euro fails the English economy is going to go down with it anyway according to this analyst-

"Nevermind the political paralysis in Westminster, what’s happening in Europe right now is very bad news indeed for Britain. Either the euro rescue package succeeds, and Britain will end up increasingly marginalised by the eurozone, or it fails and there is a double dip recession in Europe that will drag the UK down with it."

The analysts may well be correct Larv, I dont know, but if the UK is made to be liable for 10% of the cost of another countries mistakes we're screwed anyway, after the banking crisis we cant take the hit, better we dig our heels in and give em the finger

Hey Sdigit nice to see you back

We have a reasonable strong economy back home (DK) despite the crisis, but we as a small country will be dragged up or down no matter what we do, it is quite frustrating to witness, I was never a fan of the EU, but now we are all in to deep, if the Euro chrashes the whole world will be thrown into a new economic crisis that no one can afford right now. as it is now even the US is a "giant on clay feet", think about that the Greek economy is only 3% of the GDP in the EU and look how much havoc that can make, rightly or wrongly.

I was thinking how willing i would be to help out any European problems there might be, standing alongside the stalwart and steadfast French when newly delivered exocet missiles were hurtling towards us in the Falklands.

Thanks Larv mate, it's good to be back

It's always good to have you about the place Larv with your level headed take situations but this is about as level headed as I can get on this one.

The £ has already lost 25% of its value in just a few years, if the Euro dose take a nose dive I think that as much trouble as it will cause world wide,
we will still be better off with the £ and haveing full control over it, at least we will have some controll over what will serve Britain best instead of jumping
in on this Frog contrived agreement where our first comitment will be having to bail out another country before we can even think of helping ourselves.

Sorry Larv but that doesnt wash with me, or many of my countrymen either

I'm not a Euro supporter either, but we are all connected now a days.
If the Euro crashes, you will be able to export just about zero to Europe, and thats gonna drag you down aswell.
The Yanks didn't have their Marshall-plan for the europeans, only for the sake of our blue eyes.
And you know something: If the pound goes under, you will be bailed out, even though you act as spoiled kids now( Just like Thatcher did).
We need your market, simple as that.

As for the irresponsible greeks: Ordinary folks losing 3 months pay a year.
Lets hope we do not end up there
