obama to nominate kagan for supreme court

President Barack Obama will announce Monday that he has selected Solicitor General Elena Kagan as his second nominee to the Supreme Court, according to an administration official.

If confirmed, the former Harvard Law School dean would be the first justice to join the court without prior judicial experience since William Rehnquist nearly four decades ago.
Obama’s choice of Kagan, who currently serves as the government’s top lawyer before the high court, signals a desire to dodge a major showdown with Republicans, and she drew praise from GOP legal luminaries such as Ted Olson and Ken Starr when Obama named her as solicitor general last year.
White House aides also have signaled that Obama believes Kagan could provide a forceful, effective counterweight to Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Antonin Scalia, and perhaps even be the bridge to bring Justice Anthony Kennedy onto the liberal side in narrow 5-4 decisions.

if confirmed, this will be the second woman obama has put on the court...out of a total of 4 in the entire history of the supreme court.

You do realise that of the current nine Justices six are white males, right. Is 66% not white or male enough for you?

Bummer! I was hoping he'd nominate a woman..

But srsly, she is a swing to the right of the Supreme Court during a Democratic Presidency, seems like an odd decision.

A Republican prez wouldn't think twice about putting a staunch conservative in a liberal seat so why do the Democrats have to put a moderate in a liberal seat?

The 50-year-old former dean of Harvard Law School has spent much of her professional life in academia.

I am so sick of the appointments of "women" and "minorities". FFS, just appoint someone that has a brain and can do the job. No wonder sexism and racism remain in society. Keep singling them out and people get angry. How about: best person for the GD job and be done with it.
Kagan is a leftie and will focus on social justice rather than following constitutional law. And, if appointed, she'll be there for at least 20 years.

Since when have "women" and "minorities" automatically been excluded from having a brain and being able to do the job.

hmmmm......she was the dean of harvard law and is currently solicitor general of the united states.

and from this you've concluded that she doesn't have a brain or can't do the job?

kagan was confirmed yesterday and will be sworn in this weekend.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/06/us...6kagan.html?hp

the political victories keep coming for the obama administration:

    stimulus package: passed
health care: law of the land
financial reform: law of the land
    2 supreme court nominees: confirmed

the most effective first 20 months of any administration in my lifetime.

oh, and while he was doing all that....his economic policies brought the economy back from the brink of collapse.
