NSW graffiti vandals to clean their mess
    May 2, 2010

Graffiti vandals will be forced to scrub off their own mess under a new sentencing option available to courts in NSW.

From Monday, NSW courts will have the power to order graffiti vandals to pay off their fines by cleaning up graffiti at a rate of $30 an hour.

A usual fine for a graffiti vandal is about $220, meaning it will take offenders about seven hours to work off their fine.

Sunday marked Australia's first graffiti action day in NSW - a joint state government and Keep Australia Beautiful initiative.

Premier Kristina Keneally, who took part in Sunday's clean up, said making vandals do the tedious work of cleaning off graffiti would help drive home the message their behaviour is unacceptable.

"Offenders will quickly learn their vandalism has implications," Ms Keneally told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"When you are caught you will face the consequences."

The graffiti clean-up orders program is part of the state government's new harsher package targeting graffiti.

Being convicted for graffiti vandalism can now land offenders in jail for up to 12 months.

The Federal Minimum Wage (minimum wage) is currently $14.31 per hour or $543.78 per week (before tax).

This rate took effect from the 1st pay period starting on or after 1 October 2008.

Casuals covered by the minimum wage should get at least a 20 per cent casual loading.

So $30 per hour is quite a reasonable salary for such a menial task.

good in concept. problem is, that forced labour is usually not worth it, someone has to look after them, they do a crap job, waste cleaning materials etc

    lets see.

It's not uncommon for labourers to be paid that much in oz.

^ my dad is a builder, and I know for a fact that he can't find people to work for much less. It may be a little different in quieter times, but the building boom hasn't really slowed down that much, even with the global economic downturn.

that is a very different story to your first assumption , and you'll find no shortage of advertised jobs for laborers at $20/hr .

suspect you dad is after tradesmen ?

^ tradesmen get much more. The thing is, workers, even labourers can pick and choose during building booms. Sometimes my dad finds labourers for 25$, and they just don't turn up for work as they find something that pays more - so he offers them more if the pressure is on to finish the job.
Don't believe me if you like, but I have heard my dad get annoyed at this very issue many times..

point is your dad is not a large enough sample to claim $30 is not uncommon .

Especially when a quick search of vacancies nationwide indicate $20/hr .

^ so you use google, and I speak to people directly involved
maybe the reason these employers have to go as far as advertising on the net is because they can't get workers???

    whatever...

This is from the dopey sepo premier sheila who wouldn't even make a good doggie. Oh dear, give me strength. How on earth does the NSW Labor movement keep coming up with these dills, Surely she must have something on someone in power. Otherwise she would be imposing all this bullshit on us. This just adds more to the premise that the state of New South Wales is run by the mafia.

    A$30/hr = 18 GBP/hr

    Those are experienced/skilled labourer rates

Private tradies charge rates starting around A$60/hr (36 GBP/hr) domestic sparky/plumber etc.

Small garages charge mechanic rates starting at around $80/hr (48 GBP/hr)
