LONDON - BRITAIN'S Foreign Office apologised on Saturday for a memorandum by a civil servant suggesting Pope Benedict should open a hospital abortion ward when he visits Britain this year.

The document, which was leaked to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, also included the proposals that the pope should bless a gay marriage and launch papal-branded condoms when he goes to Britain in September.

The paper said the ideas, ridiculing the teachings of the Catholic Church against abortion and contraception, resulted from a 'brainstorm' session. It said Britain's ambassador to the Vatican had expressed the government's regret to senior officials there.

'This is clearly a foolish document that does not in any way reflect UK government or FCO policy or views,' a spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. 'Many of the ideas in the document are clearly ill-judged, naive and disrespectful.'

The paper said the proposals, drawn up by a junior civil servant in a memo headlined 'The ideal visit would see...', were circulated among officials in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Downing Street office and at the Foreign Office.

The document, which had a cover note admitting that some of the plans were 'far-fetched', also alluded to sex scandals involving paedophile priests in a number of countries by suggesting Pope Benedict should launch a helpline for abused children. Other ideas included getting the pontiff to perform forward rolls with children to promote healthy living and even performing a duet with Queen Elizabeth, the Telegraph said.

The Foreign Office spokesman said no ministers had been shown the document and it was withdrawn when senior officials became aware of it. The individual responsible had been moved to other duties.

Excellent humour...the Benedict condoms suggestion is probably the best and is a real dig at the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church.

What are you saying about SD's sense of humour???? Nah, definitely not the case, SD is easily in my top ten . . . especially as he and slackula and sdigit are one and the same.

All very amusing but they would never dare say these things about a Muslim leader or other religion. When it comes to Christianity it seems 'hate laws' don't count as the liebour establishment would rather respect a religion that advocates hate rather than love. Fvck the pope anyway, Nazi sympathiser and pedo apologist.

    2. Whose god orders the most violent plight for nonbelievers while on Earth?
Correct Answer: C. (The Christian god because he ordered his followers to kill all those of a different religion, including family members, friends and even their cattle, whereas the Moslem god simply required the enslaving of nonbelievers .) “If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods . . . thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people . . . If thou shalt hear . . . Certain men . . . have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods . . . Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants ofthat city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword” (Deuteronomy13:6-15). “Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection” (Koran 9:29).

A bit more apologizing from the Pope would go down well.

Aren't you all missing the point in your frothing-at-the-mouth condemnation of the Pope and the Catholic church?

I'm neither Catholic nor religious, but this feeding frenzy on particularly the pope is ridiculous . . . why not focus on the topic at hand and start a thread pillaring the guy and his church i stead of turning everything into this gang-rape?

The issue is misuse of/abuse of a civil servant's position, nothing else. As I mentioned before, what if some prat civil servant, like the one in question here, decides he is against the war in Afghanistan or Iraq?
What if he were to write something as equally 'funny' about returned servicemen and women having to walk down Oxford Street starkers, showing off their amputated limbs so they can receive money from the government?

Surely some would see it as being hilarious, others would see it as a commendable and poignant stab at the government for continuing the war . . .

If you want any and all civil servants to do as THEY please, irrespective of their role then go ahead . . . laugh all you wish for the shoe will certainly be on the other foot in the future . . . because; you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time

No, anyone irresponsible enough to discourage the use of condoms with HIV as prevalent as it is deserves whatever abuse he gets, he and his church are a menace to the World. Of course, there's the f-ing altar boys thing too, and posing for photos with George Bush despite knowing he is responsible for over 100,000 deaths in Iraq. I'm sure if there is a God he/she probably thinks little more of this clown than we do.
I actually had some respect for John Paul, the last Pope.
