Double charging foreigners - In England

BEATRIX Potter fans who flock to the Lake District from Japan will be hit by a 5 fee to fund conservation work.

The Japanese have been singled out because they head in their thousands to the region where the writer once lived.

The charge, starting next week, is aimed at raising 25,000 in the first year to fix walkways in the National Park.

Beatrix, who created characters such as Peter Rabbit, owned a farm in the area.
The number of Japanese tourists has soared since the 2006 film of her life, Miss Potter.

Tourist chiefs are hoping to extend the charge to other foreign visitors.
Everyone who pays the fee - thought up by Nature Lakeland - gets a Peter Rabbit badge.

Japanese tourist guide Junko Ishiwata, based in the Lakes, said: "The Japanese love nature and I don't think my countrymen will object."

But B&B boss Andrew Dobson said: "They want what they pay for - no more, no less."

I would not mind paying a fiver to get into the ancient city, unfortunately it's a lot more than that and about 12x what Thai's pay.

If we say 5 quid is 30 to 60 minutes of work in the UK then that fee in Thailand would be 10baht or so?

There is a Thai restaurant in Newcastle that has a double pricing policy. If you are Thai or with a Thai partner then you automatically receive a 20% discount off your bill. All others pay full price. I would have thought it was illegal but I'm not sure.

Interesting to read the readers comments on the OP if you follow the link, all of them disagree with it saying it looks bad for the UK and stinks of racism.

Yes. Very unusual reaction for Sun readers.

Its a donation, not compulsory, you get a gift, predominatly aimed at the huge numbers of Japanese visitors because they respond well to conservation projects.
