One of Australia's most infamous gangland bosses, Carl Williams, has been beaten to death in prison.

Police said Williams, 39, died of a cardiac arrest after sustaining head injuries in a fight with an inmate.

He was serving a minimum of 35 years at a high security prison in Melbourne for the murder of three gang rivals.

Commonly known as "Fat Boy", Williams was a well-known figure in Melbourne whose life of crime had been turned into a hit television series.

In a statement, Victoria police said they believe "an altercation occurred between Williams and another inmate" at Barwon Prison.

ONE OF two men who shared a high-security unit with Carl Williams is a suspect in his murder investigation.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the fatal bashing, which involved a weapon.

Assistant corrections commissioner Bob Wise said this afternoon that the Melbourne underworld figure had shared his Acacia unit at Barwon jail with two other men and spent six hours a day in a day room with them.

The two men have been separated since the fatal attack.

Williams, 39, died of cardiac arrest about 1.30pm after receiving treatment for head injuries.

Williams was serving life imprisonment in Barwon's maximum security Acacia unit with a non-parole period of 35 years for ordering the murders of three underworld rivals and the failed conspiracy to murder a fourth person.

He pleaded guilty in 2007 to murdering drug dealer Jason Moran and his father Lewis Moran and amphetamines trafficker Michael Marshall.

Williams was a key player in Melbourne's underworld wars, in which 35 people were killed from 1998 to 2009.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said attempts to revive a man who had been seriously injured after being assaulted failed and he died at the scene.

Victoria Police said in a statement they were “in the process of notifying the family and will have more details shortly”.

Homicide detectives have arrived at the prison and a crime scene has been established.

Williams had one child, a daughter, with his ex-wife Roberta Williams, a convicted drug trafficker.

Williams' father George was released from prison in June 2009 after serving a sentence for drug trafficking, while his mother Barbara was found dead in 2009 after an apparent overdose.

Victorian Supreme Court judge Betty King said when she was sentencing Williams in 2007 there were “no other appropriate penalties for crimes of this nature, gangland executions carried out . . . in the presence of frightened men, women and children”.

Justice King said Williams appeared to enjoy notoriety, giving interviews and making statements outside court. She expressed concern he could become a cult hero.

“You are a killer, and a cowardly one who employed others to do the actual killing,” Justice King said.

Williams was a key character in the first series of Channel Nine's Underbelly.

The decision by Victoria Police to pay for Williams' daughter's private school fees was on the front page of The Herald Sun today.

Carl Williams is dead and believe me the world is better for his passing. It’s one more vote for a cleaner Australia. He was scum and don’t let TV shows like Underbelly ever fool you otherwise.

You would have heard the news earlier this afternoon. Williams, serving more than 30 years in jail for three murders, was battered to death by two other inmates.

Actually, his head injuries caused a fatal cardiac arrest. It is still not clear exactly what happened and the intriguing question is why?

From our sources I can tell you this much: Carl Williams was in maximum security with two other inmates. Those three shared an area. One of them, I’m told, only moved in last week. Williams regarded him as a very close friend.

So why was he bashed to death? And why now? A strong theory is that it was triggered by the Page One story in the Herald Sun that revealed that taxpayers forked out $8000 for the private school fees for Williams’ daughter Dakhota.

The payment was made by Victoria Police. A letter written by the Victorian Government’s Solicitor’s Office also showed that Police offered to pay a $750,000 debt that Carl Williams father George owed the Tax Office.

That offer was later withdrawn following legal advice.

The Herald Sun said today it was unable, for legal reasons, to outline why the school fee payment was made.

It is fair to speculate that other prisoners thought any deals being done by Williams or his father could mean they were talking to the Police. That, in prison lingo, Carl Williams was a ‘dog’. And that can be fatal.

A source told me a short time ago that Williams had met with Police at that ‘holiday place down the coast’ because he thought he could do a deal and get a reduction in his sentence.

We cannot know what deals were discussed. Last month, his ex-wife Roberta Williams, who has a shocking driving record going back twenty years, appeared in court on two charges of driving while suspended.

She already had convictions for driving while suspended and faced a mandatory jail term. The charges were suddenly dropped in Heidelberg Court without explanation. Again, you can only speculate.

And there is another possible factor here about the timing of Carl Williams murder. On Saturday night maximum security prisoners at Port Phillip jail wedged mattresses against their cells doors and set them alight.

The same sort of action that killed five inmates in Jika Jika at Pentridge in 1987. At Port Phillip, nine prisoners were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and then transferred to Barwon Prison.

Was there any connection?

Three years ago, Carl Williams, the man they called ‘the baby-faced killer’ was sentenced to a minimum of 35 years jail for the murders of his gangland rivals: Lewis Moran, his son Mark Moran, Mark Amelia and Michael Marshall.

He claimed he was ‘certainly not ashamed of the lengths I was forced to take to protect myself and my loved ones. I did what any man would do.’

Not any man. Just a piece of greedy human flotsam. He will not be missed.

Police are questioning an inmate at Barwon Prison over the bashing death of Melbourne gangland killer Carl Williams.

Williams, 39, died after suffering head injuries from an "implement" before going into cardiac arrest at Barwon Prison, outside Geelong, his lawyer Rob Stary confirmed.

Victoria Police confirmed the death in a statement, and said that they had detained a man for questioning.

"Police believe an altercation occurred between Williams and another inmate about 12.50pm with Williams suffering head injuries after allegedly being struck about the head," the statement read.

"A man is in custody and will be spoken to by police as part of the ongoing investigation."
Williams was allowed to associate with just two other inmates for just six exercise hours a day, between 8am and 2pm.

Reports said prison officers were just 10m away from the prisoners when the attack took place.
The incident is also believed to have been captured on CCTV cameras.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics arrived at the high security prison about 1.20pm and found a man in a critical condition.

Williams was housed in solitary confinement at the prison's Acacia Unit outside exercise hours, Mr Stary said.

Underworld figure Mick Gatto said he had heard unconfirmed rumours about Williams having died but said that was all he had heard.

"I would rather let dead dogs lie," he told AAP.

"If you hear any more let me know but I would rather not comment on him."

He said Williams was "certainly not" a friend.

Williams was serving 35 years for the murders of four gangland rivals during Melbourne's underworld war.

He was found guilty of killing Jason Moran, Lewis Moran, Mark Mallia and Michael Marshall as well as conspiring to murder Mario Condello.

He had one child, a daughter, with his ex-wife Roberta Williams, a convicted drug trafficker.
He divorced from Roberta after being jailed.

Williams' father George was released from prison in June 2009 after serving a sentence for drug trafficking, while his mother Barbara was found dead in November 2008 after an apparent overdose.

Williams became a deadly player in the infamous Melbourne criminal scene after he was shot in stomach by Jason Moran over a drug-related debt in October 1999.

He survived the attack but became involved in a bitter and bloody feud with the Moran family and their associates.

He came to be nicknamed the "baby-faced killer".

Williams was in the news headlines today after reports Victorian police had been paying for his daughter to attend a prestigious private school in Melbourne.

Williams had been upset this morning over the Herald Sun report, his lawyer said.

"Of course he was (upset),'' Mr Stary told AAP, who said he had spoken with Williams about 9am.

"It exposes his daughter to risk. Of course he was concerned about that. He was not concerned about his own wellbeing, he was concerned about her.

"I just hope that justice prevails.''

Channel Nine will screen a special on the life and times of Williams at 8.30pm tonight, titled Carl Williams: Baby Faced Killer.

Paper defends school fee report

THE Herald Sun has defended its publication yesterday, hours before Carl Williams was killed, of a report that police had paid his daughter's school fees.
The newspaper's front-page ''exclusive'' said Victoria Police paid about $8000 for the private school fees of the daughter of Williams and his former wife, Roberta.
In an online editorial posted late yesterday afternoon, the Herald Sun said the story was in the public interest.
The murderer had been convicted of killing at least four people and found guilty of conspiring to kill a fifth, and ''had many enemies''.
The editorial said he was ''one of the greatest enemies of the people of Victoria'', an architect of the ''bloodiest and most shameful chapter in Victoria's history - the underworld wars''. The paper said few would mourn his death at the hands of another inmate inside Barwon Prison.
In response, Williams's solicitor, Rob Stary, described the sentiments in the editorial as reflecting ''this pack mentality … that they [the newspaper] have promoted''.

Apparently he is no great loss, but the newspapers stance is interesting, they possibly? killed him by releasing the story, they claim that it was in the publics interest, but if the creep had become a valuable informant and made a deal, this info could possibly have saved future victims of crime and the TAX payers many times the daughters school-fee.

Journalists claimed moral high ground can sometimes be hard to see, to say it in a nice way.

On the other hand if a secret deal was carried out, there must have been a big cock up somewhere in the system for the information about the daughter to slip out.

Naa no use crying over spill't milk, the creep is gone and presumably another hard core criminal will have to spend a lot longer time in prison if convicted off manslaughter, that is two for one so to speak
