Woman dies after hijab got caught in go-kart axle

A WOMAN died when the Islamic head dress she was wearing was caught in the axle of a go-kart she was driving yesterday.

The 26-year-old Muslim had been enjoying a day out with family at the Port Stephen's Go-Kart track in New South Wales when her hijab became caught up at high speed.

Paramedics said the Sydney woman suffered severe neck injuries and went into cardiac arrest after the hijab's material tightened rapidly around her throat.
Shocked onlookers freed her from the kart and paramedics managed to revive her before she was airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. She died later.

Police seized the go-kart late yesterday afternoon as a WorkCover officer arrived on the scene to begin an investigation.

Port Stephens duty officer Inspector Brian Larkham said: "While she was riding somehow part of her head-dress has got caught in the mechanism of the go-kart and tightened around her throat."

I doubt they would let you drive a gokart wearing a normal scarf, but it would be racist to disallow muslims in traditional garb to ride gokarts.

Same thing happened donkeys years ago on a miniature train ride in Tamworth, Staffs. Or was it a sari? Can't remember. Long & dangling & bloody stupid to wear on any sort of mechanical ride, anyway.

years ago, i came up on to a bunch of jap road bikes, from a distance i thought i saw something flapping at the back of the last one, i sped up to catch and warn em but got there too late, the shiela on the back had some sort of long coat/jacket, but as it had warmed up she had taken it off and tied it around her waist, end result me dodgeing bits and pieces of a z1r and people going down the road, the jacket managed to entwine itself in the brake and spokes..bloody mess for sure

Can you imagine the outcry if "work and safety" now bans the wearing of Islamic headress on all carnival rides or in the near proximity of any industrial machinery?
Screams of racism will echo around the world and Jihad will be declared!
But not in Australia because we are too damned stupid in case we offend someone - we will find a way to ignore or justify - we are such nice people and we believe everyone wants to love us?

Bonus points for knowing Gertrude Stein's mordant comment about the event without looking*.

Long scarves banned on ski lifts for the same reason.

Islamic society of Australia to sue for not having been provided special islamaproof go-karts.

    And win.

Every Aussie go-kart to have a fixed speed limit of 1.3 kph in order to provide safe fun for all religion and races.

this is a total non-story. It's the kind of accident that could have happened, and does happen, anywhere and has nothing to do at all with hijab. People have accidents like this all the time, wearing all sorts of clothing.

    for example :

British schoolgirl strangled to death in freak go-kart accident in Hong Kong
    p://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1251923/British-schoolgirl-strangled-death-freak-karting-accident-Hong-Kong.html#ixzz0kgYC8Bit

A British schoolgirl was strangled to death in a freak accident when her scarf got caught in the engine of a motorised go-kart in Hong Kong.

Yes, but that story doesn't get to spread the all important Islamahate.

    Thus the lack of response.

People need to be warned of the evils of Islam.

That and the evils of scarves.

I only hope there will be more muslim strangled wearing clothes from the middle -age. As I said previously, wearing decent clothes it would not happen. And of course a helmet, riding a go-kart it's more than recomended.

what a twisted, warped, hate-filled pysche you must have, if you're actually wishing people dead simply for wearing a style of clothing you don't like - no different from some brain-dead mullah passing a fatwa on girls for wearing hot pants and bikini tops. This woman died in a freak accident, exactly what happened to the 15 year old British Christian girl that was wearing a scarf go-karting in Hong Kong not so long ago. Perhaps you think that she 'deserved it' too, because she wore a scarf that was not appropriate for go-karting.

properly worn and secured, there's nothing dangerous about wearing hijab riding a go-kart, especially under a helmet. Unfrotunately for her, she likely didn't take enough care. People that are wearing ties looking round factory floors where there's heavy machines with moving parts usually make sure they're clasped also, just in case there's some sort of accident and they get strangled.

It's not a kind of clothes moron, it's a hideous tablecloth to hide the woman to any other people view. Anyway, muslims are better dead than invading Europe.

I like to enjoy a muslim free country when I go back in Switzerland for summer holiday.

Last go kart places I went to no loose clothing, no scarves etc allowed, obviously they wouldn't be allowed to ban hijabs though as that would be racist or something.
