    Tragically this is inevitable and can only become worse in the short term; the long term depends on the action taken by the Chinese authorities so better not hold your breath. All those paragons of Western takeaway and throwaway society are now well established in China with a massive potential market. Combined with the Asian attitude toward rubbish disposal this is a potent recipe for an environmental nightmare indeed...

    They already do this in the UK.

    Landfills near housing have misters that spray scent out. Cherry is quite popular, it's strong enough to cover the smell
