3 charged in D.C. shootings; police seek fourth suspect

3 charged in D.C. shootings; police seek fourth suspect

Washington (CNN) -- Police continued their search Thursday for a fourth suspect wanted in connection with a shooting spree that killed four people and wounded five others in southern Washington D.C.

Authorities have already charged three other suspects -- including a 14-year-old boy -- with 'first degree murder while armed' in the twin shootings that took place Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the first shooting about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on Galveston Street where they found 17-year-old Tavon Nelson wounded. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward, said Metropolitan Police Officer Quintin Peterson.

At the second location -- on South Capitol and Brandywine streets -- police found eight people who had been shot.

Of the victims, two men -- William Jones III, 19, and Devaughn Boyd, 18 -- died Wednesday as did a teenage girl, Brishell Jones, 16.

The five surviving victims -- three men and two women -- were recovering Wednesday. Police did not release their names because they are witnesses.

    WJLA: Bloodshed in southeast D.C.

Officers spotted a minivan driving away from the scene of the second set of shootings and pursued it.

The chase went through D.C. into Maryland's Prince George's County and back into D.C. where the suspects crashed the vehicle, Peterson said.

As the minivan's occupants tried to run, police arrested three of them -- but the fourth got away. Officers also recovered an assault rifle that the men inside the minivan tossed during the chase, Peterson said.

The arrested suspects are: Nathaniel Dwight Simms, 26; Orlando Carter, 20, and a 14-year-old whose name was withheld because he is a juvenile.

Simms and Carter were arraigned in D.C. Superior Court on Wednesday. Both are being held without bond until a preliminary hearing set for April 15.

The teenager was taken to family court.

Late Wednesday, friends and family members of the victims gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor their loved ones.

    WUSA: Family, friends honor victims

"This is a horrible, senseless tragedy," said Mayor Adrian Fenty. "Police will work around the clock to ensure this case is brought to closure."

Officials said they don't have a motive in the shootings.

"We've made a lot of progress to stop gang retaliation and violence, and in the end if this ends up being some kind of gang retaliation -- then shame on all of us," said Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

Ho hum. Just another day in USA. Surprised they even bother reporting these sorts of things anymore. Must be a slow news day.

^Violence, particularly gun violence, is nothing new in Washington, DC. However, part of the reason this story is such big news is that DC has actually been getting less violent these past few years. Can't remember the exact numbers (and they're probably still high compared to cities in other nations) but I think DC's homicide rate was at its lowest last year since the mid-1960's. As the current police chief states, they've come a long way.

That being said, there's a perception, I think, that DC is "safe" now, which is quite obviously not true. While the homicide rate may have dropped significantly, violent crime is still a problem. To people who live in bad neighborhoods, this is not a surprise. To people who live in Northwest DC and the more affluent suburbs, this is most likely more of a surprise (if they even care or notice). The people in these underserved and totally screwed up wards within the city are extremely pissed off. It's an election year in DC. The incumbent mayor is under fire for a host of reasons, a major one being that he's out of touch, and this just adds more fuel to the fire.

Finally, there's the age of one of the suspects. Fourteen is mighty young.

No doubt the 14 year old child will be sentenced to life without parole, as America is one of only two nations in the world which does so.

Not being specifically racist, but they all have strange names , to a European, way of thinking.
If this happened in London you would almost automatically think that they were all of Afro origin ( OK Black!) is this the same in the US of A ?

Whites don't go on gun rampages, so it was pretty obvious they were black from the go.

This 14 year old child was involved in some pretty serious/deadly play time. Will not be surprised if he is the self proclaimed shooter so as to try to save the adults. So many of these little shits are out to make a name or whatever and know their age could influence the court to their advantage. Thus they has little hesitation in the use of a deadly weapon while commuting a crime which could range from mugging, car jacking, shop lifting, robbery on to murder for hire.

If you consider 16 as a kid, I guess you could considered this kid was executed along with the other teenagers. I gather your question about kid execution in the US must have some basis, (legal execution) please enlighten us.

Could easily substitute the following for black:

from areas of destitute socioeconomic demographics, where the primarily white american authorities and councils have done nothing to not isolate the inhabitants in terms of progression and opportunity.

    etc etc... or something.

So should be locked up for the next 60 years until death?

Amazing that America locks so many 13 and 14 year olds up for life without parole.

Number of children sentenced to life without parole:

    America - 2225
Rest of the World - 12

    • A survey found that 59% of the convictions were for first time offenders.
    • Black children are sentenced to LWOP ten times more often than white children.
    • An estimated 26% of child offenders were convicted of "felony murder", which holds that anyone involved in the commission of a serious crime during which someone is killed is also guilty of murder, even if he or she did not personally or directly cause the death.

    It depends on the state.

    The age varies.

One example: in my home state a 13 year old that commits murder or multiple murders would never be tried as an adult.

Therefore, gangs and older kids would have a 13 year old kill somebody, knowing they'd get out at 18 or 21 at the latest.

After there murders by 13 year olds, the state changed the law.

And voila, 13 year old committing pre-meditated murders, and multiple murders was reduced.

If a 14 year old kills 3-4 people - no - he/she should never be released into society again.

If a 13 or 14 year old commits aggravated 1st degree murder or multiple murders, yes, lock them up.

And seriously, I think they should be hung.

^ Got to be a pretty sick society when murders by kids are so prevalent that people start talking about the death penalty for minors. Welcome to USA, leading the world into the future.

No, I would recommend rehabilitation and constant psychological assessment for an undetermined period. They are more than likely a product of their environment, at 13 or 14 it isn't too late to recondition how they view the world.

Mister cool; If you think Americas make you laugh, the little criminal shits you would rehabilitate, will make you roar when you work with them and listen to their stories. If you can understand their rap talk in the first place. No state advocates killing 13 year old kids, now if they could just convince the shooters of that. The opportunity is there to give individual help, The churches, social system etc would welcome you.

Black on black murder is far more prolific that any other race group, saying that the UK comes out pretty much on top as well that fits into this frame. It would be far more prolific if Asian and blacks had a get-together I'm sure.
Perhaps a good idea to let them battle it out,let the whites stand aside, let them just get on with it.

Sometimes bleeding-heart, moronic fools make me want to cry... Especially ones who have no skin in the game...

So who forced a 13 / 14 year old to commit murder... The oppressive over-class of WASP's in the US denied these poor souls the 'right' of a better life and forced them into a life a murder and crime???

I used to live on South Capitol Street, but the part 2 blocks away from the Capitol.

At the second location -- on South Capitol and Brandywine streets -- police found eight people who had been shot.
As for the poster on the first page that noted that this killer will "get life without parole" that is completely FALSE.

In the District (inside Washington DC) penalties for murder and violent crimes are far less than in neighboring Virginia and Maryland.

    Why?

Because Marion Barry lightened sentences - and he got re-elected.

Oh yes, lets blame it on middle/upper class society as to why these kids commit murder. We hold the key to thier future, we are the ones that make them who they are, as we are the all so great "Magicians of the young".

Give me a break. WASPS have nothing to do with this. What it DOES boil down to is the lack of proper up bringing. I know plenty of poor people that have the correct values instilled in them from birth. You don't take an active life in bringing up your children, teach them right from wrong, then they end up doing this.

    I am a static whore.
