Lovelock: 'We can't save the planet'

Lovelock: 'We can't save the planet'

Professor James Lovelock, the scientist who developed Gaia theory, has said it is too late to try and save the planet.
The man who achieved global fame for his theory that the whole earth is a single organism now believes that we can only hope that the earth will take care of itself in the face of completely unpredictable climate change.

Link to some of the video. An interview with John Humphries.

How arrogant... The planet has been here millions of years and the virus known as the human race is but a tick mark in time... When the time comes, we humans will vanish and the planet will still be here...

Sad to see that the man who has invented that charming concept of Gaia, has now lost the plot. But he is 90 years old so he can be forgiven.

Why would Gaia care much about Global Warming? It is not even a catastrophic event on global scale. It is happening and it may or may not destroy our present technology based society but it does not even endanger the human species. We will survive as a race, just not at the present insane population level. We won't even slide back to the stone age. Some level of Civilisation will remain, at least on the level of the Roman Empire or the ancient Chinese Civilisation. Those did not need large resources.

Muadib the earth exist a little longer than " milions of years".

Takeovers, you lost me...lol. why would warming up of the climate destroy technology? microwaves and satelites cant take the heat, but humans do?

well according to the only data we have the earth stopped warming up in 1998/99 and currently is cooling down again ( the data is disputed though because of some technical stuff most of us wouldn't understand).
But the climate change goes way above our heads, even scientists lack data to understand it. The truth is we did screw up the earth untill now and i can't see how we can stopp it in the near future...

^ Takes millions to make billions... I was too lazy to lookup the exact date the earth was formed... It was either a Tuesday or Thursday as God takes long weekends and plays golf on Wednesday...

    That is not the problem.

When the earth is transformed in a major way, that the coastlines disappear, that agriculture breaks down in many regions, then many millions of people will be displaced, millions will die of starvation. Wars will be fought over resources and habitable land. The explosion of the world population makes such a scenario more likely.

The present population can only be sustained through modern mechanised agriculture and through industrial production of fertilizers and pesticides. So if the global infrastructure breaks down, not millions but billions of people will die. Technology based civilization may or may not survive such a disaster.

But there will remain enough habitable land under any such scenario that the existence of man will not be at risk. Unless it ends in global suicide throug nuclear war, but I don't believe that will happen.

If we, as a species, made this bed, then we're just going to have to lie in it. Unless people can live their lives without relying on the huge transportation, industrial, and logistics infrastructures that climate-change supporters claim are the cause of all this potential doom and gloom, there is nothing that can be done short of an orchestrated attempt at mass depopulation to curb the demands of global consumerism.

Can't save America, can't save theUK, Can't save Oz, Can't save the World, so what else is new. I'm sure glad I'm over 50 and have lived most of my life, I would not want to be a child now, here or in one of the sinking western countries.

Our children will be ok, I believe. They face less preferable employment chances, that is true but all in all it will be still ok. But yes my situation in retirement will be much better than theirs.

For their great grandchilderen it will be another matter. They will face a dire situation unless many of our present problems will be solved and I don't see the solutions coming yet. That doesn't mean they won't be solved. I still have hope.
The biggest problem being the runaway population. How to bring it down to below 2.000.000.000?

^^ agreed, especially on overpopulation issue. No politician today would have the balls to do what the chinese did with the single child policy, and that would just have to ba a beginning...

I'm afraid the reduction process won't be smooth...

you mean encouraging couples to kill their female firstborn ? A good policy to prevent feminazi overtaking , though...

It actually didn't, as the "King of Jews" escaped the slaughter ... luckily for Herod, however, the Jews themselves disposed of their "King" (quite a tosser actually) a few years later.

What are you talking about? Nobody is encouraging that. It is an unwanted side-effect. But what are the alternatives? Do you think letting the population grow unchecked is better?
