Australia - British Backpackers Scavenge Bins For Food

Backpackers scavenge for food, Airlie Beach may run out of water after Cyclone Ului leaves trail of destruction

HUNGRY backpackers have resorted to sifting through rubbish bins for food in Airlie Beach after Cyclone Ului cut power to the north Queensland town.

Airlie Beach has been put on "critical alert" as the water supply falls desperately low in the aftermath of Cyclone Ului.

Schools and businesses are closed, restaurants shut, and hotels are forcibly asking guests to leave as the north Queensland tourist mecca struggles to cope without power.

No power has left many without tourists and residents without access to cash or Eftpos with reports of backpackers scouring rubbish bins for food.

"Water is critical," said Whitsunday mayor Mike Brunker.

"We have put out a critical alert warning."

"We are asking people to conserve water as much as they can, with the water supply below 10 per cent without power to pump through from reservoirs."

    More here.

    "Sifting through rubbish bins"

This is likely to be pure journalistic hyperbole. It's inconceivable that Airlie Beach would run out of food within 24 hours of Cyclone Ului. They had days and days of advance warning and the people of far Nth Qld are very much accustomed to preparing for cyclones and the aftermath.

Got to admit, I quite like the idea of backpackers feeding from dustbins even if it isn't true

Actually I suspect that there could be a grain of truth in it, but it's not really "news" since it seems to me that it's quite normal behaviour for some backpackers. The cyclone is a bit of an irrelevance.

The local Lions Club had a free sausage sizzle yesterday and fed one and all, including the backpackers and even the Poms.

Yeah, it's bull alright. It is perfectly normal behavior for pom backpackers to eat out of bins as they are too lazy to get off their arses and do any physical labour.

The only job they can do is pour beers for hard working Aussies.

Which means there'd plenty beer to go around. The report was speaking about food, y'know, stuff that used to be alive, growin' and roamin'?
