Volcano Erupts Suddenly in Iceland. Homes evacuated.

A volcano in southern Iceland has erupted, forcing hundreds of people living nearby to evacate their homes.

Eyewitnesses say they can see flames and a steady stream of lava from the Eyjafallajoekull glacier.

Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of the Icelandic civil protections said: "We estimate that no one is in danger in the area but we have started an evacuation plan and between 500 and 600 people are being evacuated."

Public broadcaster RUV reported that the eruption had started shortly after midnight and that the area's main road had been closed.

It added that three Iceland-bound Icelandair flights, out of Boston, Orlando and Seattle, had been ordered to turn back to the United States.

It said local residents were being evacuated because of the risk of flooding caused by melting glacier waters.

"Ash has already begun to fall in Fljotshlid and people in the surrounding area have reported seeing bright lights emanating from the glacier," RUV said.

"There is currently no sign of flooding, but it could be imminent according to experts," it added.

"It is not clear exactly where the eruption is taking place but it is being investigated."

A volcano in the area of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier last erupted in 1821 and 1823.

Several hundred people have been evacuated from their homes, as a volcano erupted in southern Iceland.

The volcano near the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier began to erupt shortly after midnight, leading to road closures in the area.

No one was in immediate danger, but 500 people were being moved from the area, a civil protection officer said.

It is almost 200 years since a volcano near Eyjafjallajoekull, 120km (75 miles) east of Reykjavik, last erupted.

"We estimate that no one is in danger in the area but we have started an evacuation plan and between 500 and 600 people are being evacuated," Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of the Icelandic civil protections department told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

There are fears that the volcano could cause flooding, as it causes ice to melt on the glacier above it.

"Ash has already begun to fall in Fljotshlid and people in the surrounding area have reported seeing bright lights emanating from the glacier," RUV public radio said on its website.

"It was a bit scary, but still amazing to see," Katrin Moller Eiriksdottir, who lives in Fljotshlid, told the BBC News website.

"The ash had started falling and we couldn't leave the car. They have now closed the road but we'll see what happens in the morning."

Three Icelandair flights, bound for Reykjavik from the United States, have been ordered to return to Boston, RUV radio reported, and much of Icelandic air space is a no-fly zone.

The last volcanic eruption in the area occurred in 1821.

These aren't pics from this eruption, but googling images for 'iceland volcanic eruption' shows some pretty cool shots.

Remember seeing a few documentaries years ago about lava flows etc and some of the people killed by them. The pyroclastic flow (the cloud of roasting hot ash and rocks) gets most, but sometimes the lava flow. Not a nice way to go when trapped on an island of land in the middle of a flow and just watching the molten lava surround you and creep closer and closer until finally enveloping you.

If it does all go tit's-up then I hope the UK give them no help at all after they ripped the UK tax payer off, and no, it was not the government, the Icelandic people voted to rip-off the UK, let's hope it's a big one.

If the UK Government had not given away money to a bunch of rich people who lost money in Icelandic banks, they would not need to be paid back. Maybe someone should inquire why it was the British Government's problem to reimburse people in Britain who lost money in Iceland's banks.
