Australia : Warnings fail to stop Bali surge

Warnings fail to stop Bali surge

TRAVEL warnings? Who cares? While President Yudhoyono is in Australia, more than half a million Australians each year are now heading to Indonesia - despite government warnings telling us to ''reconsider''.

An unprecedented surge has seen the number of Australian tourists to Bali and the rest of Indonesia doubling every two years since the start of 2006.

Indonesia has now overtaken the US, Britain and Thailand to become Australia's No. 2 travel destination after New Zealand.

The Bureau of Statistics says 567,000 Australians visited Indonesia in the year to January, and since June they have averaged well over 50,000 a month.

Australians are the main tourists to Bali, despite the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website warning us sombrely: ''We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the very high threat of terrorist attack.''

Five years after the last Bali bombing, most tourists now ignore the warning, the main impact of which is to deter school groups.

The flood of tourists is the bright light in an Australia-Indonesia relationship, which has been underperforming in other economic areas, despite good relations at government level.

Indonesia has been one of the success stories in the '00s, its democracy putting down firm roots, and its GDP growing by two-thirds in a decade.

Maybe the more money made by Indonesians from Aussie tourists might help stop some of the bombings....anyhow Bali is a hindu island so Muslims should be made to keep out....

US and Britan are both long haul and expensive so no real surprises there

that leaves Thailand as the loser .

Australian surfers would make up for a lot of the tourists who visit there - always have, always will as it is the surfing safari dream of every young grommet. They sold magic mushroom omlettes way back in the day when I did it.

But as Mid says, Indonesia is probably now getting a lot of tourists that Thailand would have got in the past. I guess many travellers would rather take their chances with terrorists as opposed to tuktuk mafia and jet ski thugs
