Florida - Pedophile gets 20 years in US for exploiting Pinay girls

Pedophile gets 20 years in US for exploiting Pinay girls

A Florida court sentenced last week a British-born American to 20 years in prison for sexual abuse of two Filipino children.

The court found 64-year-old Donald Mathias guilty of subjecting the two girls, aged 11 and 12, to repeated sexual abuse while visiting the Philippines in 2007 and 2008.

Mathias, who pleaded guilty to the charge December last year, was also ordered to pay $200,000 in indemnification to his victims, and to serve five additional years probation after completing his jail term. He was arrested in October in Miami last year.

The girls’ mother, meanwhile, is undergoing prosecution in the Philippines for having her children sign a contract requiring them to be Mathias’ “sex slaves".

The mother was paid thousands of dollars and assisted in filming Mathias while he committed the abusive acts, according to reports.

    UNICEF lauds decision

The decision was welcomed by the United Nations Childrens’ Fund (UNICEF), the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in a joint statement posted on UNICEF’s Facebook account.

“Traveling child-sex offenders present a significant and growing threat in South East Asia, including the Philippines. This long sentence sends a strong message that child sexual abuse and exploitation will not be tolerated in the Philippines," UNICEF representative Vanessa Tobin said in the statement.

She also commended the continuing cooperation between the Philippines and other governments around the world to stop this crime from further endangering Filipino children.

For its part, the DOJ facilitated the gathering of evidence against Mathias for presentation in court in accordance with the Treaty of Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between the Philippines and the US.

“The DOJ coordinated with the witnesses and facilitated the provision of documentary evidence. Realizing the strength of the evidence against him, Mathias entered into a plea agreement," said Chief State Prosecutor Ricardo Paras in the same statement.

The DOJ is now prosecuting the mother of the girls for violation of Republic Act No.9208 or the Anti-trafficking in Person Act of 2009. She is facing a penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of not less than P2 million if found guilty.

    Campaign vs child sex tourism

In line with the campaign against child sex tourism, the DOT launched the ASEAN Regional Education Campaign in 2007 together with the ministries of tourism from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The regional campaign aims to raise awareness of child sex tourism and encourages tourists and locals to protect children in tourist destinations, the statement read.

“In the Philippines, the campaign encourages people to call or text the national hotline 0919-7777377 to give information about child sexual abuse and exploitation or report suspicious behavior by adults around children," DOT director Maria Victoria Jasmin explained.

Passengers disembarking from aircraft are informed of the campaign through a notice on the arrival/departure card upon entering the country. - KBK, GMANews.TV

    Lovely.

What is it with Asian mothers and selling their children for sex.

I'm sure it happens in small amounts all over the world. Just that in Asia it appears to be far more common.

^^The mother is in jail and, given the amount of press coverage of this case here in the Philippines, is likely to be there for a long time. If/when convicted, as she is almost sure to be, she is looking at life. Unlike some of the cases in Cambodia, there is absolutely no question that this filthy fucker is guilty. I hope he enjoys his very short stay in a US prison before somebody shanks him.

Great if they go after the pedos, they deserve death, but it is only a matter of time before these religious fanatic do gooders decide to prosecute all sex tourists such as those who patronize adult bar girls. Between the feminists and the religious schizophrenics in the USA, it's inevitable. And no, it's not impossible to get caught, when someone is a victim of crime in Pattaya, the local news media graciously print their names and nationalities then put that information on the internet where anyone who Googles your name can find it.

Being a Yankerikkkan must really suck. Especially if you travel half way round the world to pay 3rd world peasant prostitutes in order to sexually violate them.

No kidding- pedophiles are supposed to have it really rough in US jails- he'll either spend his time being abused by other inmates or he'll be completely isolated from everybody else.

    At 64, he's done regardless.

    Good grief!

I couldn't imagine what state of mind a parent would have to be in to do something like this!

    She's shocking, he's a sickening deviant.

Whatever happens to the sikko will not be bad enough !!

Although it is a serious subject and absolutely disgusting it still goes on - will they never learn !

Was talking about this last night with a friend here in Phuket - same as me - approaching three score years and ten - and he came out with a comment that I must admit made me smile!

' There is nothing wrong in fancying 11 and 12 year old girls - when you are 11 or 12 yourself !'

This line gets trotted out every time one of these stories surfaces yet it has very little in the way of substance or fact to support it.

Excuse me for not being as pure and self righteous as you both are. I would not do the things I do here at home simply because they are not available, or not the same there. There is a big difference between a Thai girl working in a bar to send money to her family and an American crack whore.

Care to expand on that? I'm sure many of the prostitutes you frequent in Thailand, do in fact have a drug habitt and don't actualy send money to family. What's the big difference?

    Thats correct.
There are places in US where prostitution is perfectly legal and they would start there before coming over here and stopping it where it is already illegal.

I am sure its just the cynic in me that says that for every western foreigner abusing phillipino girls, there are a dozen (or more) of the home grown phillipino men doing the same thing. And japanese men. And Chinese men.

NOt condoning by any means, but again, we get sidetracked into discussions implying this is a "western" vice. The prosecution of the mother is a start - but who bets the "message" gets translated into - only do buisness with your own sort, rather than - don't sell your kids.

Stamp out the "home grown" market -and the "tourism" market will dissapear.
